A/N: An au where Jughead didn't stupidly hand himself off to Penny, Hiram, and the Ghoulies, and he was there for Betty instead, like he should have been.
Jughead felt that something was wrong. He couldn't explain it, he just felt it in his bones. Betty was his first thought. It could be nothing, but he had to check, just in case. He hopped on his motorcycle and raced to Betty's house. Immediately, he knew he was right.
There were police cars up and down Elm Street, sirens flashing loudly. He sped up, his heart pounding in his chest, he would never forgive himself if something happened to her and he wasn't there to protect her. When he slowed in front of her house, he saw with horror that there were tears streaming down his girlfriend's face. She was sobbing while Archie held her up. Jug pushed jealousy aside quickly, ashamed of himself for even considering that. He pushed past the yellow police tape. An officer charged him and held him back from his love,
"Hey kid, this is a crime scene, you can't be here!"
"Let go of me!"
Jughead yanked his arm out of the officer's grasp, elbowing him in the process, knowing he'd have to pay for his actions later, but he didn't care. All he cared about right now was making sure Betty wasn't hurt.
He ran up to her and Archie, quickly grabbing her from him. Archie was relieved as her weight shifted from him to Jughead.
"Betty, what happened?"
"I-i-it was him, J-jug," she choked out, pointing a shaky finger towards the police car directly in front of her house, "H-h-he," she couldn't finish. She broke down, shivering and crying harder than ever. Jug stripped off his leather jacket and draped it over her shoulders, finally looking at who was being held in the government vehicle.
It was Hal Cooper, Betty's father.
"I'm so sorry baby, that I wasn't here to protect you, what did he do to you?"
She just shook her head, unable to form words. Archie supplied them instead,
"He trapped her and Alice in the house. He told them about why he did all the horrible things he did and told them he was going to kill them when he was done." Jughead was shaking with anger as Archie continued, "He was strangling Alice, about to kill her, when Betty reached the fireplace instruments, hit him over the head with one and knocked him out cold."
How could he do this to her? To both of them? And there was nothing he could do, other than hug his perfect Betts closer to him as she cried. He shot Hal a look of pure hatred before turning and trying to steer Betty back into her house. She struggled, however, and fought him as he opened the door.
"No!" Betty screamed, "Don't make me go back in there, please!" His heart broke as he saw how broken she was. He asked Archie with his eyes and his friend nodded.
"You don't have to go in there if you don't feel safe, baby." Instead, he walked them both over to Archie's house. He knocked on the door and Fred Andrews opened it, welcoming them in without asking any questions. Jughead gave him a grateful look as he led her towards the couch. He sat down and lay her down across the couch, her head in his lap. He stroked her hair gently until she finally cried herself to sleep. Not wanting to wake up his princess, he didn't get up. He texted Archie making sure it was okay if they crashed on his couch for tonight, before falling asleep as well, not caring that he was sitting up, Betty being the only thing on his mind.
