A/N: Very long AU for y'all about what could have happened that dreadful night in the woods.

Veronica had just finished her trial. That meant that only Betty’s and Jughead’s remained. Veronica hung tightly onto Archie’s arm while Jughead supported Betty. They walked slowly, none of them knowing what was coming next or if they would live to see another day.

When they reached the next clearing, there was no clearly marked challenge like the two previous times. The four friends stood there, looking around for a clue, a sign that showed who was next and what they were supposed to do.

“This one’s my favorite,” they heard from behind them. They whirled around to see Penelope, as well as several of her ghoulie guards.

“Must be a horrific one, then, who’s is it?” Archie asked.

“This one is for the both of you,” she gestured to Jughead and Betty.

“W-what do we have to do?” Betty asked shakily.

Penelope pointed to two small grey boxes that were set on the tree stump in the middle of the clearing that had somehow gone unnoticed. One had an E engraved in it and one had an F. It took the four of them a few moments to realize what that stood for.

“Forsythe and Elizabeth,” Jughead realized. He walked over to the box marked F, while Betty approached the box marked E. With shaking fingers, they simultaneously opened the two boxes.

They both contained the exact same thing. One gun, plain and silver. Betty gasped and Jughead just stared.

“Your task is simple. Two guns. Two bullets. One of you shoots the other, to kill, and then the three survivors get to go free. If not, we kill all of you right now. Have fun!” She said with a psychotic laugh.

The two looked at each other. Neither made any move to pick up the gun.

“Pick up the guns, right now,” Penelope ordered.

The two did so slowly.

“You’re deranged,” Jughead spat while Betty just cried, “It’s okay, Betty, my life has been good, you three are the best friends a guy could have and Betty, I love you more than words can describe.” Betty’s eyes widened,

“What? You can’t be serious. You can’t actually think I’m going to kill you.”

“You have to. There’s no other choice. Shoot me and then you guys can go free, it’s the only way.”

“Absolutely not, I promised to never hurt you, Jug, and that is a promise I intend to keep until the day I die.”

“Well, I’m sure as hell not killing you, Betts. I can’t live without you.”

“I can’t live without you either, I love you.”

“You can see why this one is my favorite,” Penelope said, “All the crying over each other, all the I love you’s, fully knowing that at least one of you is going to die, very shortly. But seriously, let’s get a move on, I’m getting impatient.”

“Y-you’re a psychopath, a murderer,” Betty cried.

“Yes, yes, and I suppose I’m also an evil witch. Call me all the names you want, it doesn’t bother me, and it doesn’t change anything.”

“Betty,” Jughead looked into her eyes, “Please. This is what I want. I want you to be able to live your life, with or without me. So many people depend on you, Betty, the world would be a dark place without you in it. Your mom, your sister, your niece and nephew, Archie, Veronica, Cheryl, The Serpents, even. You guys are all I have, and I have no regrets,” Jughead’s voice broke.
