“So, have you guys heard? Cheryl and Toni dropped out of the Prom race because The Farm said they couldn’t run because it was ‘immoral’ or something,” Veronica seemed very excited about her piece of news.
“Why doesn’t it surprise me that Edgar Evernever is totally fine with crushing Cheryl’s dreams? I know she’s wanted to be Prom Queen forever,” Betty said sympathetically.
“Sure, sure, but so have you! Remember our first sleepover? You literally said the one thing you wanted out of your Junior year was to be Prom Queen with your boyfriend, and now that you have one,” she nodded at Jughead, “You have a shot!”
“I also said I wanted to get good grades, and at that point, I wanted to be with Archie” Betty pointed out, “which, no offense, Arch, is certainly not my dream anymore.”
“Yeah, but you already have good grades, and you have Jughead,” Veronica argued back.
“Why would we want to run?” Jughead asked pointedly, “It’s just a stupid tradition that makes people feel bad about themselves.” He saw Betty’s face fall, although she hid it well, and he doubted that anyone else noticed. He felt kind of bad.
“Yeah,” Betty laughed it off, her eyes still a little sad, “Besides, can you imagine? Me as prom queen?”
Just then, Cheryl chose to walk in.
“You, cousin? You want to be Prom Queen? You know you have to be popular for that, and gorgeous, like moi. Although, I suppose it doesn’t really matter if I can’t do it anymore.” After distributing her ‘wisdom’, not realizing she had hurt anyone’s feelings, she marched off.
“Don’t listen to her, B, you are gorgeous, right Jughead?” Veronica gave him a look.
Jughead nodded quickly, and Betty gave him a small smile.
“Well, at least think about it, I would do it, but I don’t have anyone to run with,” clearly a jab at Archie. Betty gave Jughead a side look,
“I don’t think so, Veronica.”
“It’s up to you, although I do think you should do it!”
“Just drop it, okay?” Betty seemed a little tense. Jughead put his arm around her. She leaned into him.
“Alright, geez, just an idea.”
“But while we’re on the subject of Prom anyway,” Betty put her hand on his thigh and gave him a sweet smile, “Jug? Will you go to Prom with me?” She gave him the puppy dog eyes he just couldn’t resist.
“Only for you, Betty Cooper.”
She smiled at him, for real this time.
“You guys are so cute, I’m so jealous!”
Betty giggled and Jughead just rolled his eyes.

“So,” Veronica said as they got ready for Prom, “Who do you think will be Prom Queen if you’re not running?”
“I have no idea, Veronica,” Betty said honestly.
“Alright, so even though you said you were fine with it the other day, aren’t you bummed you’re not going to be prom queen?”
“Why is it so important to you that I admit this? Fine, I did want to be Prom Queen, alright? If Jughead doesn’t want to run, then we won’t run. Relationships are two-sided. Compromise is important. If he’s not comfortable with it, then it’s fine and we won’t.”
