A/N: Basically Veronica telling Jughead what FP actually told him on his birthday, but in her sweet Veronica way.
“You’re the perfect girl next door.”
“I hate that word,” Betty said, shaking.
“I’m the loner from the wrong side of the tracks. You threw this party, not even caring that it is the last thing I would have wanted.”
“But I tried to just invite your friends, it’s not my fault that they-”
“You and Archie are my friends. Everyone else, including Kevin and Veronica, are not my friends. Up until two months ago, they would be people I would have actively shunned.”
“But why?”
“Because, Betty, in case you haven’t noticed, I’m weird. I’m a weirdo. I don’t fit in and I don’t want to fit in. Have you ever seen me without this stupid hat? That’s weird.”
“Why are you getting so upset?”
“Because I’m not one of your- your projects, Betty!”
“You’re not! Jug, you’re not, you’re my boyfriend!” Betty held his face in her two hands. He pushed them away,
“Until what? Until you’re tired of slumming it with me? Or until Archie changes his mind and says he wants to be with you?!”
At this, Betty’s eyes widened and she stepped away from him, disappointment and sadness written all across her face as if he had slapped her. He knew he had struck a nerve, gone too far. She shook her head in disbelief, turned around, and walked away.
Jughead clenched his eyes shut tightly and kicked himself. Great. He ruined everything again. Why had he said that? He sat back down and ran his fingers through his hair.
Betty pushed past the partying teenagers, trying to keep her tears from falling. She physically ran into Veronica by mistake.
“Betty? What happened?” Veronica asked with concern.
“Nothing,” Betty lied, wiping her eyes, “I’m fine.”
“Betty, I know you’re not, you’re literally crying right now.”
“I don’t want to talk about it,” Betty snapped, before disappearing into the house.
Veronica huffed and ran in the opposite direction to find the source of the problem. When she reached the entrance of the shed, where she thought Betty had just left, she looked inside and saw Jughead sitting by himself, face in his hands.
“Of course it’s about you, isn’t it always?”
“I don’t want to hear it right now, Veronica, what are you talking about?”
“Did you and Betty just fight about something?”
“I don’t think that’s any of your business.”
“Don’t you pull this crap on me right now Jughead Jones. I don’t really care if it’s your birthday or not. If my best friend is crying her eyes out and won’t talk to anyone, that makes, whatever just happened, my business.”
He looked sad, and a little pathetic, to be honest.
“She’s crying?”
“Oh get over yourself, since I’m pretty sure you’re the problem, clearly you don’t care that much. Betty makes you seem like the perfect guy. ‘Oh Jughead’s so great’ ‘He’s so sweet and we like the same things and he actually cares about me’ ‘He’s such a good kisser too, you have no idea’ Clearly it’s all bullshit because then you go and pull this. What did you even do?”
“I called her out.”
“On what?! What has she done that’s so terrible exactly? Now I’m asking you for the last time, and stop being so vague. What. Did. You. Say. To. Her.”
“I told her I didn’t want to wait for her to be bored of me or wait for her to run to Archie as soon as he comes calling.”
There was a moment of silence.
“Oh my goodness, you are an idiot.”
“Thanks,” Jughead answered dryly.
“Tell me you did not actually say that.”
“Wish I could.”
“Men are so stupid.”
“Has anyone ever told you how nice you are?”
“I cannot even with you anymore, either you go fix this, right the hell now, or I’ll go be comforting, and trust me, you do not want that option, because it involves a lot of name-callings and possibly the end of your relationship.”
“I’ll try, but I don’t think she wants to see me right now.”
“I don’t blame her, I don’t want to see you right now either.”
“Fine,” Jughead huffed, “I’m going.”
He got up and walked out. Veronica sat in the chair he had just vacated and sighed,
“I hope he knows what he’s doing.”
He pushed past a group of people on his way to get into Archie’s house.
“Yo, Jughead, where are you going?”
Jughead ignored them. He searched around until he found Betty sitting alone in the Andrews’ living room, half-submerged in darkness.
“What are you doing here?” he asked stupidly.
“Oh you know,” Betty said, a little hysterically, “Just waiting around for Archie to love me.” Jughead winced.
“I shouldn’t have said that.”
“Then why did you? How could you say that to me?”
“I wasn’t thinking, I was upset and-”
“Right, I forgot, you were upset because I threw you a birthday party. You’re right, this one’s on me. Serves me right trying to be the p-p-perfect girlfriend.” At this, she burst into tears again, “God, Jug, you have no idea how much that word hurts me. I thought you of all people would understand but you’re just like everyone else. I don’t have to be perfect all the time! I thought I could be myself with you, but apparently, I’m too perfect? Is that it?”
“No, Betty, no. You’re not. I know what I said, and I’m sorry I said it. You don’t deserve that. I should have been less careless.”
“But that’s not what I want either, I don’t want you to have to be careful around me. You should always feel comfortable talking to me and telling me the truth. If that’s your truth and you don’t want to be with me, then just say it. Because, I, for one, don’t want to be led along, if you don’t take me seriously.”
“I do want to be with you, Betts, I promise I do. I was just upset because all these people crashed your party, and I took it out on you, and I’m really sorry. Honest.”
“I just want to make sure this is something we both want because if you’re unhappy in our relationship then-”
“Betty, I love you.” Betty stopped mid-sentence.
“What did you say?”
“You might think it’s too early to say, but if you’re asking me for the truth, that’s it, and you don’t have to feel pressured to say it back or anyth-”
“I love you too, Jug,” she said, cutting him off. Jughead could think of nothing better to say than,
“Great,” and then he kissed her. After they started running out of the air, Jughead pulled away and asked,
“Did you really tell Veronica I’m a good kisser?”
“Oh shut up.”
