I wake up with my head feeling like it was going to explode at any second. I slowly raise my head with blood dripping from the back. I take off my shirt and warp it around my head. I look over to the side and gasp at the sight in front of me. Jared's head was going through the windshield. A tear falls from my eye. I open the door and step out. My legs were wobbly but I still forced myself to slowly walk away from the car. The sun was setting, darkness slowly crept over the city. How long was I out for? I look around to find myself inside the dry cleaner. I walk around hoping to find the break room. There was a little bit of hope in my head that there would be anything or anyone that would help me. Each step I took made me wobble side to side. It felt like torture just walking to the break room. Eventually I entered the break room.
The room was completely barren. The only thing worth mentioning was that the vending machine looked like it was ripped apart with soda cans scattered around it. My mouth watered at the sight of soda cans littering the floor. I've never been much of a soda drinker, but my mouth felt like sandpaper. I slowly walk to the cans on the ground. I pick up a Pepsi, the can still felt cold. Weird. I open the can and take one sip. The sweet flavor fills my mouth. Before I knew I drank it all in under a minute. I pick up another can of soda. This time it was a orange flavored Fanta. I drank half of it before my thirst was quenched. My body felt a little better. It might not seem like much but it's still something. I drink the rest of the can before throwing the can across the room. I search my pockets for my phone. I go to my contacts and call my wife. It went straight to her voice mail. I tried calling my son Alex, it buzzed for a few seconds before he picked up.
"Dad?"
"Yep. Are you okay? Are you with mom?"
"Yeah, she's-she's fine. Where are you?"
"I'm near my job. Got into a car crash."
"How are you still alive? I'm surprised that the zombies didn't get you yet."
"Zombies?"
"Yeah. They eat people, so they're zombies." In the front of the store I hear a few voices talking. "The zombies ev-"
"I have to go bye."
"Wh-" I hang up and look for a place to hide. I knock over one of the tables to use as cover. The doorknob turns; the door slams into the wall. Two teenagers walked into the room. They both wore black ski masks, they had backpacks that looked full. I could hear cans and what ever was in their bags bumping into each other.
"Hey, I don't think there is anything here."
"There's soda. That's something."
"We have enough soda at home though."
"More soda wouldn't hurt anyone."
"What about our health though?"
"That's the thing you're worried about?"
"Yeah. We are in a zombie apocalypse." I take a peek over the table. One guy was holding a pistol while the other one had a baseball bat with a few nails sticking out of it. The guy holding the bat tossed it to his side and took off his backpack. He bent down to pick up the soda cans. I silently creeped to the door. I don't think they heard me since they didn't react to me at all. I sneak out the door and eventually made it out of the dry cleaners. Jared's car was halfway inside the building, his body still not showing any sign of life. I walked away from the place and into the city. I turn onto a street with a small group of zombies looking towards me.
One zombie stood out in the tiny group. The zombie was about a head taller than the rest. His arms were the size of my torso, his legs looked like they only had muscle. He looked directly at me, right in the eyes. The zombies around him sprinted towards me. I snapped out of my shock and ran the opposite direction. I hear what sounded like a boar roar behind me. I take a quick peek over my shoulder. Zombies were being thrown to the side and some were sent flying into the air. I think I even saw one's head get crushed by the bigger zombie. The muscular zombie was running towards me like a bull. He didn't care about the others, as long as he catches me it would be fine by him. Before he could run over me I jump to the side and land on my arm. The buff zombie caught up to me and tried grabbing me, but I was already out of his reach. Luckily I was able to get back up onto my feet without being surrounded by the group.
