Ryan opened the door at once. "It's good to see you, Megan."
Megan smiled tightly as she entered the house.
"Come in and sit down," Ryan ushered her into the living room.
"Ryan, I don't think. . ." she began.
Ryan held his hand up. "I understand," he said. "I completely understand. I've been very distracted lately and I haven't let you in. Megan, the truth is you are a wonderful, patient person and you deserve better than I can give you. Circumstances have come up that have forced me to grow up and do some serious reflection. I can't commit right now, but I should have treated you better. You need someone who can. I own up to my shortcomings and this breakup is all my fault, but I want you to know that I'm here for you as your friend and wish you only the best. That's really what you deserve."
Megan stared at him with her mouth agape. Soon she formed a smile on her face and her eyes sparkled. "I realized I'm not your first priority but I can respect that you can admit you were not fully committed to our relationship. I wondered if it was something I did."
"Absolutely not. It was all me."
Megan stood. "I wish you all the best, including a second Academy Award."
Ryan smiled and got up. They embraced.
"Thank you for being honest with me. I have to admit that even though we're breaking up, you've made me feel good."
"If anyone in the media asked why we broke up, I'll say you dumped me."
Megan laughed. "Oh, you don't need to do that, but Ryan, you don't have to answer this if you don't want to, but is there someone else?"
He was silent for a moment before saying, "Actually, there are two people, but let's save that for another time. When Megan looked questioningly at him, he replied, "I don't mean to be all mysterious, but to tell you the truth, I'm still sorting it out. So much is happening right now that I don't know where to start, but once it's all clear, I'll let you know, I promise. I owe you that.
