Buddy knew he had screwed up big-time the moment he told Ryan that little lie.

Damn! He saw right through it!

That night as they were reading in bed, Lucy told him it was a lame lie. She said he'd better come up with answers real fast.

As he watched her leave for her daily walk with her good friend the next morning, leaving him with her chin jutted out and gritted teeth, Buddy reflected on how the scene with Ryan had played out. She was right, of course. Now he had to fix the problem by finding answers real fast.

Buddy didn't even glance at Shana when he came in that morning. He charged straight into his office like a bull seeing red.

Using his iPhone, he paced around the office, calling employees.

"Got anything?" he barked on his first call.

"Not yet, Sam replied, "but— "

Buddy hung up and went to his next employee. Buts weren't acceptable this morning.

Susan, another employee, answered. "I had a trail when he had a brief affair with Claire Benitz, but it went cold..."

Buddy hung up. Next

Chin told him. "I've been snooping around about this Christine woman. Everyone is being real tight-lipped, but I found this guy who had a crush on her at the time..."

Buddy almost hung up when he heard the "but" word. Luckily, he came to his senses and stayed on.

"He remembered when she was dating Ryan Monti. She always looked so happy. He knew he didn't have a chance, but one day she looked all upset when she came home with her parents and she stayed in the house for weeks, not seeing anybody. This guy tried to see her, but her parents kept turning him away. Then one day she disappeared," Chin explained. "Her parents said she transferred to another college far away but he never believed them. He then bumped into her a few years later and she was walking with twin toddlers. She claimed she had gotten married but became uncomfortable when he asked about her husband. He knew something wasn't quite right..."

Buddy's shoulders sagged. He closed his eyes and shook his head. Ryan baby, I think there's something to this letter, Buddy sighed. It no longer looks like an open and shut case.
