3rd person pov
"It's a beautiful day outside today, huh?"
Dream said to his twin brother Nightmare. And right Dream was. The sun was shining; a warm light cast across the horizon. A light breeze swept across the ground, rustling the leaves on the tree of feelings.
The two brothers were leaning against the tree, pleasantly chatting amongst themselves. The young skeletons hadn't been around for a long time; they had recently been created by the guardian trapped inside of the tree of feelings. Their mother was weak and had to ensure that even after her death, both positivity and negativity would live on in this world and across space. She made two skeletons, as she was too weak to create two human bodies. One child would be named Dream, and be the guardian of positivity. The other child would be named Nightmare, and inherit the role of guardian of negativity. She then leaned against a tree that would soon become the tree of feelings, and took her final breath. The tree absorbed her soul, and the plain tree became the tree of feelings.
There weren't many people living in the area. As a matter of fact, there was barely anyone in all of Dreamtale. There was a small town nearby, but Dream and Nightmare hadn't yet noticed it. As far as they knew, it was just them and the surrounding nature. That was okay with them though. At the end of the day, they had each other. They were always there to keep each other company. It seemed that they never ran out of things to talk about. The most common thing that they communicated about was their purpose.
"Brother?"
"Yes Dream?"
"What are we here for?"
"... I'm not sure. Maybe we'll find out one day."
"...yeah."
And soon after that conversation, they would both drift into a comfortable silence, and eventually sleep.
In the morning, both would always wake up to the sun shining. It seemed the world was always happy. They would both open their eyesockets and rub the sleep out of their eyes. Then Dream would ask Nightmare how he slept, and Nightmare would say he slept okay. Then Nightmare would ask Dream how he slept, and Dream always had a positive remark.
But one day... it all changed. Nightmare woke up sweating. This was new. Dream asked his twin brother if he was alright. Nightmare simply said:
"We need to go south."
Dream was beyond confused. What could Nightmare have possibly dreamt about that gave him the urge to go south? What was there anyway? Now they both were tempted to head south. So they stood up, and Nightmare lead the way. They walked south for fourteen minutes, and came across a small town. Dream was in awe, and Nightmare was surprised. Why was Nightmare surprised? He didn't think his dream actually had a chance of existing, let alone him encountering it. Him and Dream walked into the town, both looking around at the small houses and shops, completely clueless about what they were even seeing.
"What are those giant box shaped things?"
"I don't know."
People poked their heads through their windows, staring at the two skeletons. Dream and Nightmare were confused. They had never seen other people before. One curious little girl left her home and approached the two brothers. She asked them who they were. They told the little girl that they were the guardians of positivity and negativity, and were named Dream and Nightmare. Her eyes brightened and she told them she knew who they were. The people slowly came out of their houses, and approached them as well. Dream introduced himself to them, and Nightmare did too but wasn't as talkative as his twin brother. Dream soon befriended the townspeople and the mayor, talked to the humans and monsters and accepted the flower crowns that the children made for him.
Nightmare watched his brother laugh and smile, chatting away happily. Dream had completely forgotten about Nightmare. The guardian of negativity felt so alone, angry, jealous, sad... but he kept it hidden. A few townspeople looked at Nightmare, their eyes full of judgement. Soon, more people stared at him, and Dream was oblivious to the fact his brother was being glared at by his new friends.
Then and there the townspeople decided...
They didn't like Nightmare.
