3rd person pov

Nightmare cleared his throat, and began to read.

"A long time ago, when the universe was forming at its primary stage, there were three trees necessary for life in every universe. The tree of life, the tree of magic, and the tree of feelings. These trees were needed for the existence of the multiverse, but each tree was in a different universe, and was protected by their own guardian."

Dream gave a breathy wow in response. Nightmare chuckled and resumed the story.

"This book will tell you the history of Dreamtale, the universe that the tree of feelings is located in. The tree of feelings bore apples; one half golden, the other half black. The black ones contained feelings of negativity: Fear, Depression, Hatred, Guilt, Grief, Vengefulness and many more. The golden apples held feelings of positivity: Happiness, Hope, Faith, Love, Determination, Bliss, Gratitude and many other good feelings."

'So that's what the apples are for... huh. Well then that means that we should protect those apples by all means.'

Nightmare thought.

"Wow... those are some strong apples!"

Dream said, a childish manner in his tone. Nightmare smiled and continued.

"The tree of feelings inside Dreamtale made positive and negative feelings, which were sent to each universe to make sure life could naturally subsist. If the tree didn't exist, no emotions would be present in any living being; they would be like a zombie without any emotions. This is why the tree of feelings is so sacred and important."

Dream has stars in his big, golden eyes. He seemed really into this. Almost as much as Nightmare, but not quite as much.

"Unfortunately... some of the positive and negative feelings were unevenly distributed throughout the universe, and some people received more negative emotions than they were supposed to get, and tried to damage the tree to get at least one golden apple. Those golden apples didn't only have power, but had immense confidence within them. If you had one of those apples... you could do anything with success, even if it was bad, like murder."

Dream's eyesockets widened. Nightmare began to sweat a little, and cautiously flipped the page.

"One of the people who received too much negativity was able to severely injure the guardian of the tree of feelings. Her life was connected to the tree, meaning that if she died the tree would die too."

Dream gasped. The air around them grew colder, and the twins huddled closer to each other, trying to stay warm. Nightmare gulped, flipping the page and read more.

"The guardian killed the negative man, and began to feel hatred for the mortal being. She knew that if she didn't do anything both her and the tree would die. So, her only option was to fuse with the tree so she could prevent it from dying. Then she realized, if she did that, there wouldn't be anyone to be the guardian of the tree, and the apples would be easily taken."

"W-what will she do?!"

Dream stammered. Nightmare looked him in the eye, and hugged him closer.

"Let's find out."

Nightmare turned another page and continued, a bead of sweat rolling down his skull.

"She was losing a lot of blood. She was scared. So, she used the magic from the tree to gather all the positive and negative energies that she could get, and created life with them."

"Ooh! Ooh! I bet they were us!"

"Hush, I'm trying to read."

Nightmare said slightly annoyed, and cleared his throat.

"In her bloodied hands were two little balls made up purely of positive energy and negative energy. She named the golden ball Dream, because she had a hunch that he would be a dreamer. She named the other ball Nightmare, because he would be Dream's polar opposite."

Dream squealed with excitement.

"I knew it! I knew it would be us!"

Dream exclaimed happily. Nightmare snickered as Dream waved his fists around, very excited to have his name in a book.

"The guardian was too weak to create human bodies for the energies, so she created skeletons based off of a skeleton she saw in another universe. She placed the energies inside of the two skeletal bodies, and the tree absorbed her soul, completing the fusion. She then became the two guardian's mother."

"We... we have a mom... she's right here..."

Nightmare's pov

Dream looked backwards, staring at the tree. I dog-eared the page we left off on, and closed it. It's now dark out, the stars in the sky glimmering. Dream yawned, and cuddled into my side. I smiled and closed my eyes, feeling at peace. Unfortunately though... I can still feel the negativity swirling around in my soul. I wish it would just go away. I then drift off into darkness.

(The story of Dreamtale isn't my idea. I'm just putting my own spin on the concept.)
