CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE | Past Is In The Past

"SAVANNAH?"

"Mmhm?" She mumbled, lost in a haze. She only drank a glass of red wine and she was out. I strongly doubted her. Maybe she had a good time with her 'fix' before coming to this party.

"What do you mean?" I insisted. Her head lifted, hitting my chin. With her signature smirk, she raised her head to eye me.

"You don't want to know," she looked like she drank a milkshake containing lemons, pickles and bitter gourd at the same time.

"Try me," I added. "Please."

She shook her head, her eyes observing my face. Her eyes were flickering to the silk cloth in my front pocket, hands still resting on my chest. Her fingers began to play with its edges. I watched how the holes of her mask begin to get overcome by the water that was threatening to spill out. She was basically testing the waters around her.

"Don't tell me if you don't want to," I tried but miserably failed because she clicked her tongue.

"I want to."

Even the red in cheeks couldn't hide the palour of her face.

Savannah's mom touched the side of her face with great love and care, her soft fingers then pinching her baby cheeks. " My love," she chuckled and then looked towards the door.

" I'm going out to meet some people, Vee Vee. I'll be home by tomorrow. You want anything from the store, huh?"

The bright silver eyes twinkled with happiness as she saw her mother's face hovering above her. The glow-in-the-dark stars gave out their phosphorus glow in the darkened room but little Vee Vee could literally feel her mother by her side. All the emotions poured off her in waves that comfortably tucked her in a blanket of love.

"I want your hair band," she said in her most serious tone, her lashes wet with water. Mother had told her not to play with the inflatable pool but she never listened. "And a pink, frilly dress too."

Her mother's velvety laughter lit her little heart on fire. "Oh, I'll buy one for my girl."

Savannah trailed her wet, chubby, little fingers along her mother's contoured face and grinned, flashing her baby teeth. The door to her room opened and she saw bright light from behind the door. Her soft plushy was pushed to the side by the movement of the door. Like a ragdoll, her toy hit the wall and Vee Vee puckered her lips in a soft sneer.
