Frank Iero
Four months later
I take a deep breath as I step out of the car, butterflies fluttering through my stomach in double time. "This is it," I sigh, taking it all in as my hand intertwines with his. The multitudes of people making their way toward the auditorium as music blasts from inside, coloured dresses and black and white suits all blending together from a distance. I feel Gerard's lips press against mine, my hand tightening around his. "Lets fucking do this."
We walk toward the auditorium, hand in hand, passing all the making out teens, gossiping group, strange stares from everyone at our joined hands.
It's just like the first day all over again. Walking anxiously through the school, walking past all the cliques and collecting the strange looks.
But this time is different.
This time Im with the person I love and not a single fucking thing can bring me down tonight.
Through the auditorium doors we go, entering the crowded room, coloured in purple and blue lights, a snack table sitting at one side, a photo booth on the other.
"Oh my god, you guys came!" A deafening voice rings out over the booming music.
"Ray! Yeah we decided fuck it, this'll be fun," I grin, half hugging him as he joins us at the entrance.
'Oh, that's great. This is my date, Christa," He introduces the girl on his right wearing a light blue dress, her straightened brown hair falling to her shoulders.
"Hi, it's nice to meet you," She says genuinely, her hand intertwined with Rays.
"You too," Gerard smiles, his eyes flickering to the snack table, then back at Christa as if nothing happened.
"Come on, let's get some punch," I laugh, watching Gerards face light up.
As we make our way toward the table, I hear Christa mutter: "They're so cute together, your friends." I smile, but watch Gerards suddenly do the opposite. All the blood seems to have drained out of his face at the sound of that complement.
"Hey, what's wrong?" I ask quietly, placing my hand gently on his shoulder.
"What? Oh, its nothing, Im... Im fine," He takes a deep breath, seeming as though he's trying to convince himself more than me. But I know what's wrong.
No one but Mikey ever gave us those sort of complements.
"I know it's hard. But were going to try not to think about him tonight, ok?" I smile sadly, watching him wipe his eyes viciously.
'Yeah, I... Its just he would've loved it here-" His eyes drift to the floor, illuminated by all the colours flying through the air and I can see that his mind has gone back to that night. His eyes flash with fear as if he's just walked back into that room, seeing his brother-
"I know... But tonights our night, yeah?" I hand him a cup of punch, my gaze drifting to the dancefloor. "Come on, let's go have some fun,"
He takes a sip from the cup and before he knows it, he's being dragged onto the dancefloor, a smile beginning to edge its way to his lips. And we dance. For almost three hours the music pumps through our entire bodies, lighting cheesy grins to our faces and laughter at each other's terrible dance moves through the room.
Its the most fun I've had in forever.
But then the song ends and the music slows and all around us, couples join together in a slow dance. I look over to Gerard, his face shining in the blue light. And I place my arms over his shoulders, his on my hips.
For a while, we just stare at each others beauty, taking in the fact that we really do belong to each other. Were perfect for each other. And I love him.
"What do you think your dad will say when he finds out you went to this?" Gerard says softly, his voice barely audible over the calm music playing overhead.
"He'll probably bash me," I shrug, feeling oddly nonchalant about it.
"Oh my god... we need to get you out of that house," He mutters, his eyebrows creasing.
"Gerard," I say. This is it. Im finally going to tell him.
"What is it?"
"I've... I've finally saved up enough money to rent. We can... Gerard, we can live together when we leave school," I watch his mouth open slightly, twisting into a smile.
"Holy shit, really?" He says fervently, tripping over his words.
"Yes! Gerard, we can finally be together without my dad holding us back. I'll tell him I left for college and broke it off with you, and he won't bother checking in. It's perfect," I cry, a huge smile stuck to my face. I lean in and press my mouth against his.
"Frank I cant... I can't let you pay for this whole thing," He says, our foreheads touching.
"Yes, you can. Trust me, I want to do this,"
"Im... This is so amazing, Frank, you're so amazing," He grins, kissing me again. We stand, intertwined, for what feels like years. And Im not complaining. I can tell we're getting all the looks and sneers on the whole fucking planet right now, but I couldn't care less. They can laugh all they want, but I love him.
"Thank you," Gerard's voice breaks through the silence.
"What for?" I ask quietly.
"Everything," He mutters. "You've helped me through so much, and I genuinely don't think I'd be here today if it wasn't for you. You saved me and reminded me that there are still things to live for," I stroke his hair, smiling. "I mean, you're my first boyfriend, and I already know that I won't ever find anyone better than you. So thank you. I love you,"
"I love you too." I bring my lips to his once, tasting the sweet, loving flavour I tasted the first time we kissed. A flavour I've never experienced before, and one I never want to forget. I smile into his lips, knowing I want this to last forever.
