Scorpius sat on the stone bench in the greenhouse. A freshly cut rose pricked his fingers, as he twirled it in between his palm. He'd only been out there for twenty minutes, watering plants upon his mother's request (apparently even grown men still had to do chores when they came for a visit). He finished watering the plants and had sat down next to the rose bushes hidden in the far corner of the greenhouse.
Coincidentally roses made him think of Rose. Because of her name, most people assumed she loved flowers. Boys used to give them to her in school in a desperate attempt to woo her (Scorp never liked those people). Instead, of winning her over the flowers always made her angry. It brought her attention and stares she did not want. To get rid of her unwanted suitors, Rose began burning the flowers as soon as they were sent to her. It was a dramatic move that was more suited for James, but she did it a countless amount of times. It was kind of amusing for him.
Doing this made a lot of people believe she hated flowers, but Scorp knew the truth. Roses, particularly yellow, were her favorite and not because of their name. She always used to say that the yellow ones reminded her of the sun. The way the petals bent softly, weaving around one another in intricate foldings, was a replica of the golden ball hanging in the sky. After they started dating he'd only get her flowers on special occasions or when she was overly upset. She didn't like it when he made a big fuss over things. She was someone that preferred when he did the little things, like telling her she looked nice in the mornings or bringing her a hot cup of tea while she studied. But every once in awhile she appreciated the gesture that came in the form of the rose.
"Stop trying to peek!" Scorp scolded, tightening his fingers to prevent Rose's from sweeping them off.
She removed her hands from her face with an overdramatic huff, crossing them stubbornly over her chest. "Where are you taking me? You know I hate surprises."
"You'll have to learn to deal with one surprise." He remarked, kicking away a stray stick before she could trip on it. "Careful for that step there."
Rose winced, slowing her pace and tapping her foot on the next step to make sure her weight was secure. Scorp suppressed his smile, carefully leading Rose down the stone steps towards Hagrid's Hut, where he could see Hagrid through the windows happily cooking rock cakes for tea tomorrow night. His untamable hair appeared to double in size from the heat of the stove.
"You're still coming to Hagrid's tomorrow right?" Scorp asked off-handedly, taking his eyes off of the hut.
"I think so. Is that where we are going?" Rose asked, her shoulders perking excitedly.
"No."
Rose cursed, her shoulders slumping in defeat. "Can't you just tell me? The suspense is killing me!"
"We are almost there," He promised, nodding kindly at a Hufflepuff and Slytherin passing by. He watched them walk off toward the quidditch pitch, followed by a trail of other students who were roaming about the grounds, desperately trying to soak up that last bit of autumn air before winter struck and covered the lawns in snow.
They reached the bottom of the hill without any trippings or injuries (much to his surprise), despite Rose's negative attitude threatening to hold them back. Turning away from Hagrid's Hut, Scorp led them towards the Forbidden Forest. Roots and sticks littered the forest floor. Green fern ran up and down the barks of the trees, which were bent and twisted in odd angles. The tops of the trees spanned 20 feet above them, blocking the sun from view and casting sparkling shadows on the ground.
He headed toward an eerie trail, with lowly fog simmering along the ground and tree branches curling around the path like a crescent moon. Scorp made it a habit to wander around the Forbidden Forest whenever he got a spare moment. It wasn't as terrifying as everyone made it out to be. Take away the fog and deadly animals, it was just a regular forest. It was free of excessive noise, stress, and constant anxiety. Out in the woods, it was all so peaceful. He could go on walks, clear his head, and let the fresh forest air recharge his energy, but this space was special and something he wanted to share with Rose.
