Packing my bags, I headed to the roof for a smoke break with my friend Sue. "I'll meet you in a bit, I have to go tinkle," she waved me off. When I reached the roof, I was taken by surprise when I saw a boy covered in blood hanging from the roof top.
"Omg, WHAT ARE YOU DOING?" I asked covering my mouth in horror. "What does it look like?" He shot back with an attitude. "No matter what's going on, It's not worth taking your life," I tried to encourage him.
I stood back and tried to study his face. It looked like he was deep in thought. Instead of waiting for him to say something, I reached out to him. "Grab my hand, I'll pull you up," I reached my hands out to him. In that moment, I knew I was putting my life at risk, but I couldn't just stand back and witness a death. I don't think my concious would let me live it down.
Contemplating, he finally grabbed my hand and I pulled him to safety. I guess all those push ups and pull ups came in handy, I thought to myself. He looked at me, then I could see he must have been checking me out. Blushing, I looked away, then things were a bit awkward.
"Thank You," he said breaking the silence that had obviously set in. "Your welcome, I'm Jane by the way," I said introducing myself. "I'm Cooper, Cooper Daniels that is." He responded."What happend? Why is there blood everywhere?" I asked scrutinizing his face.
"Bob and his friend Jason has been bullying me ever since I stepped foot in middle school. It has never went this far, I just can't take it anymore," Cooper said with a distorted look on his face. I felt sorry for him, wondering how someone so handsome could get into such a sticky situation. Everything happens for a reason, some things I will never know.
"It's ok, I got your back," I said with all the confidence I could muster up. Sparing a glance at Cooper, he seemed to have no problem with a girl defending him from the small smile forming on his face. As we headed off the roof, I ran into Sue. "What took you so long?" I flashed her a look of irritability. "Sorry, I ran into Tyler." I already knew what that meant, so I didn't even waste my breath arguing.
The three of us headed to the library, the one place I knew Bob would never come. "Who is this?" Sue asked as if she just recognized someone next to me for the first time. "Cooper, and Cooper this is my bestfriend Sue," I introduced the two as I took out my mini first aid kit. My mom told me to keep it with me at all times like I do my lip gloss. While playing soccer, this kit sure came in handy. "Let's get you fixed up here," I said dabbing the cuts and bruises covered in dry blood. Cooper winced in pain when the alcohol swab made contact with his scars.
"Yea, it's gonna hurt, but you should let me finish so they don't get infected," I said dabbing at his face once more. "Throw this in the trash," I said handing the used swabs to Sue. She got up to go dispoose of the contents as I pulled out my make up kit. Cooper looked at me, then at the make up in my hand.
"No way, I draw the line there," he protested. "Well, you could always go home and tell your parents what's going on," I said raising my hands in surrender. Almost immediately his shoulders sagged and he gave in, then I started to apply the make up. Looking carefully, so that I didn't miss a spot. When I finished, I stood back and admired my work. "Have a look," I smiled as I handed him a mini compact mirror. He turned his face to the left, then to the right examining his every feature.
"Thanks your a life saver," he hugged me. "Ah, its nothing, anything for a friend," I said putting my supplies away. "We're friends?" Cooper looked at me and waited for a response. "I just put my life on the line for you, the least we can is be friends right?" I said trying to get my point across. "Of course," he smiled and gave me a hug which shocked me.
The bell blared throughout the school, indicating it was time for lunch. Sue, Cooper and I made our way to the line. My eyes lit up when I noticed we were having my favorite, spaghetti of course. After we told the lady our lunch number, we headed to look for a seat.
The cafeteria was crowded with all types of kids scrambling around. Some kid just bumped into Sue and caused her to drop her food. When she turned around, there was no one in sight. "Hey ! Someone shouted, she looked up to see Bob standing in front of her. "You just messed my new shoes up, now LICK it up," he growled causing a scene for all to see. Some students turned to look from their trays, while others were frozen with their trays in hand watching Bob's every move. Sue looked like she was on the brink of tears, there was no way I could let my friend deal with alone.
I don't know about Sue, but my Mom told me to speak up when I see someone being bullied. Don't be a bystander ! I proudly stood in front of Sue in a protective stance. "What do you think your doing?" He laughed looking around. "Try picking on someone your own size," I said stepping in his face. "Oooohs, were echoed throughout the cafeteria. Bob pushed me and I kicked him in his jackpot and pushed him to the floor. "This isn't over," I heard him mumble before I walked away .
