you smiled, nodding satisfied as you placed the final top to the birthday cake. on top of the cake was 'happy birthday, riley!" written in beautiful letters. on the side was a '#2' placed with grey-ish accessories around it. it was a huge cake for such a small child.
"ready?" isabelle asked as she walked in the kitchen. your beautiful two yearl old girl in her arms.
"yes, thank your for being here, by the way. it means the world, you really are the best, isa." you confessed before taking the smiley girl in your arms, rocking her softly.
"anything for you, y/n." she smiled before changing the topic. "when's shawn coming?"
"uh..." you glanced at the clock. "any minute now, actually."
"are you okay?" isa asked, eyeing you with a worrying look.
"course!" you turned around, opening the cupboard to take as many cups as possible into one hand.
truth to be said you really were okay. you weren't happy, but you were fine. your daughter brought so much happiness into your life, along with the most amazing experiences. motherhood was a magic place for you.
it wasn't all amazing, of course. you made mistakes and felt like a miserable mom at times but through the constant smile of your daughter you saw how happy she was. and that made you happy.
shawn was as present as he could in riley's life. when she was born he wouldn't left her side in the hospital and when you were sent home he always wanted to come over. at that time you were still so hurt and broken from your break up that it was hard for you to see him almost everyday. but it was no option that you would not let him see her.
everything started working at some point. when riley got older she would sleep over at shawn's and it was much more simple for shawn to spent more time with her. he was an amazing dad, the best actually. co-parenting was working good for the two of you, even though it was stressful at times.
the sound of the doorbell brought you back to reality. riley excitedly bounced in your arms and squealed.
"wanna see who's at the door, sweetie?" she nodded, wiggling out of your touch as you crunched down to set her on the ground. she walked as fast as she could to the corridor, her walk was still a bit unsteady at some parts. as she reached the door she carefully went on her tiptoes and tried to reach the knob, letting out an desperate little groan when she wasn't successful.
you giggled, grabbing her and pulling her slightly back before opening the door. she giggled as she looked around the door to see her dad crunched down on his knees. he peaked around the corner and gasped when he saw his daughter. she laughed and walked with open arms into his. it was adorable and almost brought tears into your eyes. the both of them looked ridiculously alike. she had his hair, lips and shared an lazy eye with her dada.
