Immediately, Emma was met by a chill in the air. She exhaled as she blinked her eyes, clearing her vision. Her warm breath met the cold air and to her shock, it was snowing.

No wonder why Asher told her to bring a coat.

"What's with the snow?" Emma asked, tightening her coat around herself.

"This is the vampire world. We prefer the winter, since the days are short and the night is long. And because the sun is basically never out, so it's often raining or snowing around here." Asher explained.

Garrett and Asher began to walk and Emma  followed them, walking through the snow with ease, but she was definitely not wearing the right shoes for this weather.

It wasn't long until they entered what appeared to be a small village, with different types of houses. But they kept on walking, even by the houses that Emma had thought to be ones Garrett was heading to.

Each house had an older look to them, yet well kept and sturdy. They reminded Emma of houses built in the Victorian era. Some of the buildings were meant to be private establishments, while the bigger buildings seemed to have stores on the first level and the second level being the home.

"Lord Garrett? Don't you have to meet with Madam Marie?" Asher asked.

"Oh, that's right," Garrett stopped and he looked down to Emma, "Stay here with Asher. I shall be back soon."

She nodded in response and then he walked off.

As they waited for Garrett's return, Emma and Asher stood beside one another under a covered area to get out of the snow.

"So, do you and your brother live with Garrett?" Emma asked, striking up conversation.

"We do." Asher answered.

"Can your brother change shape like you?"

"No, he has a different ability. Vampires with our eye color have, not only have the common abilities, like speed and strength, but we have individual gifts. Ones that even set us apart from other gold eyed vampires. Vampires with purple eyes sometimes have individual gifts, but it isn't as common. Those with blue eyes, with individual gifts, are extremely rare."

"I see. What can Garrett do?"

"To be honest, I have never seen him use a gift of his own. Unless it's a subtle gift, but I'm sure he has one."

"Of that I have no doubt. He seems really strong."

"One of the strongest I know. But, it's not his strength that makes my brother and I want to follow him. He's different than anyone else we have ever met. He gave my brother and I a reason to keep living. We had nothing, but he gave us something. And that is a debt that we'll never be able to repay."

Emma stared at Asher for a moment, before looking down.

"I don't think Garrett would want you to look at you being with him as a debt." She said, softly.

Asher turned his gaze to the girl.

"I mean, I don't know him at all. Nor do I know you and your brother. And maybe this is a bit bold of me to say this, considering my position, but from what little I can tell, I don't think Garrett sees what he did for you and your brother as a means to hold something over your heads." Emma crossed her arms, exhaling sharply, trying to preserve what warmth she could.

Before Asher could reply, he snapped his attention up and he stepped forward.

"What's wrong?" Emma asked, now alert.

"Shh!" He hissed.

Emma went silent and she looked around, trying to figure out what caught Asher's attention.
