It felt like a hazy dream to her. Not long after she was returned, she was taken to the hospital where she could recover. Of course, she was to give her story of what happened and what she could remember. Emma told them everything she could remember, including the fact that she had been taken to an auction and was sold. She couldn't give accurate descriptions of faces, except for the color of the eyes. She left some parts out, such as being sold to be a "snack" or a "mate." That didn't sound believable at all.
On the second day, Emma heard the door open and she saw a familiar face come rushing in.
"Emma!" Christina cried as she rushed to Emma and threw her arms around her.
"Ow, ow. Christina, easy." Emma said as she patted her friend's back.
"Oh, sorry. I didn't mean to hurt you," Christina pulled away and sat on the edge of her bed, "So, what's the deal?! What happened to you? You were attacked?! The police say that it was a potential human trafficking abduction. How did you get away?"
"Christina, bombarding me with questions doesn't help."
"Oh, right. Sorry."
"To be honest, I don't remember much. It feels like it was a nightmare instead of a real thing. On my way back from grocery shopping, I thought I heard your voice calling me. You sounded very distressed. So, I went down this alley, where I thought you were."
"Why didn't you call the police?"
"I was calling them. But, as soon as I pulled my phone out, something attacked me. After that...everything went dark."
"That's so scary. Are you sure it was me you heard?"
"Positive. I definitely heard your voice. Either it was you or someone is really, really good at mimicking you."
"That's weird. I can't believe it. I mean, I believe you, just...I wasn't anywhere near where you were. I was at home the whole time."
"I know. Anyway, the police are in search of people who might be trying to lure people in for human trafficking. But, I was definitely at an auction. And I was sold. I remember that. And whoever they were...they are definitely rich."
"Why do you say that?"
"Well...the amount someone bought me for...it's a ridiculous amount."
"Like what? Over a thousand?" Emma looked up at Christina, "Whoa, over two thousand?! More?!"
"More like...eight million."
Christina let out a horrified gasp and she stared at Emma in shock.
"What?"
"I know. After that, I kind of lost consciousness again and when I woke up, I was being returned to my mom. Did the police ever find the one who brought me back?"
"Someone brought you back?"
"Yeah. I don't know who it was and I didn't get to see their face."
"Uh, no one brought you back, Emma. The police found you on the sidewalk near your apartment complex."
"Wait, what? No, I definitely remember someone carrying me back."
"According to police, they said that they found you out on the sidewalk."
"Is that why everyone keeps asking me how I escaped?" Emma brought a hand to her head. Maybe she did escape on her own and everything she thought happened wasn't the truth.
"Are you sure that someone brought you back?"
"At this point, I'm not sure anymore. Sorry, Christina."
