For hisshiningstar. Thanks for this request, I had fun with this one. Gwaine is one of my favorite characters from the show.
It was rare for any of the knights to come back from a quest without injuries. But when they rode up today, you hadn't expected things to be as bad as they were. Percival had to practically carry Gwaine to Gaius after he fell from his horse. You were quick to follow them, hoping that the blood soaking through his shirt wasn't life threatening. It didn't take long for Percival to lay Gwaine down where Gaius had pointed.
"He is going to be okay. We have all come back from worse." Percival whispered as he left the room.
You rushed to Gwaine's side, taking a cloth from Gaius to help clean the blood from the reckless knight.
"You couldn't have used warmer water?" Gwained groaned, trying to roll away from you.
You scoffed, but didn't stop what you were doing. "Maybe if you were more careful, we wouldn't have to do this at all."
Gaius moved away to work on making a poultice for the deeper cuts. You frowned as you helped Gwaine pull the blood soaked shirt over his head. You gently wiped off his torso, pressing a gentle kiss to his cheek.
Before long, you were walking Gwaine to his room and helping him get comfortable in bed.
"Thank you for nursing me back to health." He grinned as you sat next to him.
You let out a gentle sigh and let your eyes roam over him, taking mental inventory of both the old and new scars that marked his body. Leaning forward, you kiss one that was just above his collarbone. Then your lips trailed to a newer one on his left shoulder. His hand landed on your waist as you kissed three smaller scars along the right side of his ribs. He let you take your time, gently pressing kisses to each wound and raised bit of skin on the front of his torso.
"Turn." You ordered, pulling back from him and finally meeting his eyes.
He nodded wordlessly and shifted so his back was facing you. Now you took your time, examining over his spine and shoulder blades. He shivered as your fingers ghosted up his back and he let out a gentle sigh as your placed your lips to the scar on the top of his spine from when he fell during training. And again when you pressed against a burn.
You made sure that not a single scar on his body was missed And by the time you were done, it was time to reapply the herbs to the newer wounds.
"I hate seeing you like this."
He nodded, flinching as your hand met the worst of the cuts. "But you are very good at taking care of me like this."
"I don't care if I'm good at it. I hate that I'm good at it now. I just want to know that you are going to be coming home alive. I'm just happy that you are okay."
He lifted a hand to cup your cheek, his thumb brushing along your lower lip. "I am. And as long as you are here, I will continue to come home to you. I don't just fight because Arthur tells me to. I fight to keep you safe. And to make this kingdom safe, because I know that I want to have children. At some point. But I want to know that they will be happy and cared for."
You smiled, bringing your lips together in a slow and sweet kiss. "I would love to have children too. But if you keep coming home on the brink of death, I don't know how we could ever have that. Can't have you dying on me before you even ask me to marry you."
You both laughed, smiling at each other. He pressed a kiss to your forehead and stood up, walking over to a cupboard against the wall.
"I guess if that's the case. I should just ask you now." He sat back down next to you with a ring in his hand. "Because I would love if you would marry me. That is, if I'm not to close to dying right now?"
You smacked his shoulder before letting him slip the ring onto your finger. "Of course I will. And you better not die any time soon. We still have children to look forward to in the future."
