My choice

A/N
I meant to post this a few months back when I got engaged, but life just got in the way I guess! My wedding was supposed to be on April 24th, but due to the Corona virus it looks like that won't be possible anymore. But regardless of when my wedding actually is, this poem still rings true, and I dedicate it, to the Man I'm going to dedicate my life to.
I hope you enjoy!

I didn't choose to be born,
I didn't choose my race,
I didn't choose my gender,
I didn't choose my face.

I didn't choose my family,
Or to be born when I was,
I didn't choose my name,
I didn't choose this house.

I didn't choose my school,
Or the uniform I wore,
I didn't choose this country,
Or this country's laws.

I didn't choose my illness,
Or the medication for it,
I didn't choose my mind,
Or the problems with it.

I didn't choose this life,
Or the bills I have to pay,
I didn't choose myself,
I didn't choose to be this way.

I've never chosen presents,
I get what I've been given,
I didn't choose mistakes made,
Or if I am forgiven.

I didn't choose my brother,
Or that there's only one,
I didn't choose the horror,
When a heart attack hurt mum.

I didn't choose the fear,
When Granddad had his fall,
I didn't choose the disbelief,
When I took that phone call.

I didn't choose the bullies,
I didn't choose the names,
Or stories they all spread,
That made me feel ashamed.

I didn't choose the pain,
When one of them stabbed me,
Or the fear when he was caught,
And threatened to kill me,

I didn't choose these clothes,
Most of them were given,
And I couldn't afford to say no,
So I took them without question.

So much of my life,
Has been without consent,
And so much of myself,
I do now resent.

I find it hard to choose,
When I'm given a choice,
I'm not used to decisions,
I'm not used to my voice.

But now I have a choice,
And I'm choosing you,
To have you and to hold you,
To start a life that's new.

I've never been so certain,
Of anything before,
I've never wanted something,
As much as now, I'm sure.

I've made my first decision,
And I'm happy it's for you,
Now we'll choose our life together,
As we both say "I do".
