We met Zainab half through the stairs and together descended it meeting Hajja, Aunt leema, Uncle Abdul and Uncle Ibrahim. Hajja was seated glancing around the living room and when her eyes set on us, her lips curled into a distain
"We don't like you too maam" I shouted at her in my head as my eyes landed on Zahra sitting next to her mother having the same look as me.
"Hajja, Abdul, Ibrahim, Haleema you are all welcome" Maami said walking straight to Aunt leema and hugging her.
"Good afternoon Hajja" Maami greeted squatting next to her
"Aunt leema" I squealed engulfing her into a hug and she hugged me back laughing
"How are you doing darling?
"I'm good Aunt leema"
"Good afternoon uncles" I greeted squatting down
"Afternoon Humaira how are you?
"I'm good Alhamdulillah"
"Good afternoon Hajja" I greeted Hajja next refusing to raise my eyes
"Of course I will be the last you greet" She said in an irritated tone.
"I'm sorry. I saw you greeting with Maami and Zainab so I decided not to interrupt" I replied instead of the "Yeah you can go fry egg with water" comeback I planned on my head.
"Afternoon" She curtly replied as I finally stood up and left with Zahra to bring the refreshments
"We are not here to stay long. We talk and then leave" She said directly facing Maami
"Back to Katsina? Maami asked surprised
"Of course not. We have relatives in Yola" Hajja replied with a scowl
"Ohh okay then. I'll just call Daadi"
"I'm here. No need for you to shout out my name" Daadi said elegantly coming down the stairs with her bubu sweeping behind her and a beautiful turban sitting perfectly on her head.
"I was going to send Zainab to call you but oh well" Mami add as they all watch her walk down the stairs as the elegant woman she is.
"My in-laws. You are welcome" Daadi greeted nicely sitting next to Maami
"Good afternoon Daadi" My uncles greeted as she smiled
"Afternoon gentlemen"
"Good afternoon Daadi" Aunt leema greeted next coming to side hug her
"Afternoon my daughter. You look ravishing" Daadi complimented after the hug
"Thank you. You always glow whenever I see you too" Aunt leema said while Daadi laughed
"Please we don't have all day long" Hajja interrupted diverting her gaze to Daadi who looked at her for a few minutes before fixing a wide fake smile on her lips
"Sure. We wouldn't want to delay the in-law now do we" Daadi said as the maids served them the drinks
"So now, can I know why you want to play the perfect movie/novel good woman? Hajja asked Maami as all attention turned to her
"This is not me trying to prove anything Hajja. I'm doing this for the peace of my family" Maami replied
"Peace? What peace. You're talking as if this is a war or something"
"It is if you look at it from my perspective. If my children get back their assets who will handle them. Who will run the company?
"Maami I told you I will" I interjected before realising what I did and quickly slapping my mouth
"You can do what? Hajja's dark gaze turned to me "Listen young lady, you are getting married soon and you know it. You will not let those white women deceive you. A woman can never lead" She finished off with a glare and I kept shut
"It might also be a physical war as those people might try getting them back from us at all cost. The assets is all about money and I'm starting a job to sustain us and also my family has enough to take care of them" Maami finished off
"What do you mean? These children are ours, you want to say we can't take care of them and your family will do better? Hajja asked narrowing her gaze
"No, of course that's not...." Maami started
"Actually yes. That's what she meant. These children are happier and will be more taken care of here. That's just the truth" Daadi dropped in still keeping that fake smile
"What I want to say here is for you all to give this your own thoughts. Humaira is almost done, Zainab is here with me and she is already enrolled. I will be working, so what more do we need. This is just a test or maybe even a blessing from Allah, to relieve us from the stress of handling everything" Maami quickly said to avoid Hajja ranting about what Daadi said
"I think she's right. It's of no use really and getting it back might even be hard. We might lose in court and that means lost of money, dignity and the assets" Uncle Abdul said
"Yes. Except if Humaira really wants it. I think the children have a right to say what they want, it's their property after all" Uncle Ibrahim added
"Darling, how do you feel about that" Aunt leema said placing a hand on my shoulder
I look over to Maami but she wasn't looking at me. I know she's allowing me to decide on my own without feeling pressurised. I look over to Daadi and with a quick assurance nod from her, I made up my mind
"I'm going with what Maami said. I do like business but I will build that from the scratch, I will make it successful, it will be so big that it will surpass theirs and then they will remember what they did.
"Yeah that's my grandchild you all" Daadi said grinning at me
"Now that's a way better idea" Uncle Abdul said as he and uncle Ibraheem smiled at each other
"Insha Allah, it will become a reality" Aunt leema said squeezing my hands
"I hope I get to see that day" Hajja chirped in and for the first time I saw a ghost of a smile on her face directed at me and Maami
Maami stood up and walked over to me then held my hands in hers. "May we live to see that day humaira. And through that journey, you won't be alone. You will have your family, your friends, your success and your grace" She said pulling me into a hug
"Insha Allah" I whispered smiling
"Well guys. This calls for a feast" Daadi shouted as the maids started bringing out the food and setting them on the dining table. Everybody stood up and walked to the table, each obtaining a seat.
Zahra and I went to help with some of the foods and as I approached the dining table everyone was laughing and joking. Hajja and Daadi even sharing an old tory of their generation's childhood Maami was laughing with them along side aunt leema and my uncles, I couldn't help but send a quick prayer to Allah. May we all live to see the day I bring down these men on their knees.
Knowing now I have my whole family's support, revenge never tastedvbetter. I will build an empire that will destroy them.
I will be the one to finish their games
