I shifted uncomfortably as he finally descended the stairs coming to sit next to his wife. My eyes trained on his narrowing and watching his every move, my hands clasped around my veil and I clenched my jaw. The atmosphere was filled with tension I knew everyone could sense the unease around us.
I didn't hate this man, surprisingly I don't. Maybe it's because I never got to know him personally and so prefer pinning the mastermind blames on Alhaji Sani or maybe it's because he's my fiance's father. Nonetheless I don't like being in his presence
Hafeez cleared his throat snapping me out of my trance as I tried to train my eyes on anything, anything else than the man's wised aged eyes.
"Humaira" Alhaji Salisu spoke, my name coming out with ease as if he had been saying it. He pinned me with a look, not menacing or cold. Just plain and void. Again, I shouldn't bother since hafeez is here. He would never throw me into the hands of danger even if the danger is his father.
Right?
Of course silly, right.
"I don't even know how to go about this or what to start saying" He said sighing as his expression turned to exhaustion. His wife squeezed his hands and he look up to her smiling a bit and squeezed back gently, as if squeezing it more than how he did will hurt her. He acted like he hurt her enough and now he's willing to treat her like a Queen.
Or at least that's the thoughts my mind is occupying me with.
"I know we have hurt you, but believe me it was never my intention to do that" He started as I resisted the urge to scoff. Yeah tell that to a much more naive person.
"I always wanted my family to start or at least stand by me as we build a business empire. Sadly my one son wanted nothing of that sort, I was really delusional to have wanted forcing him into it" He said laughing bitterly as I furrowed my brows.
I never knew Hafeez was forced to be a CEO. Come to think of it, he never discuss his father with me. I think it's safe to say they aren't on good terms or hopefully were not.
"When your father started his business I was more than happy to partner with him when he gave me the offer. I finally thought that if I partner with him and help him build his own empire I'll be able to convince my son and we will build ours" He stopped raising his eyes to meet my gaze
"Please continue" I said my voice raspy and rough
"Everything was going well until Alhaji Sani approached me saying he had an offer for me and that instead of waiting to build a company, why not get an already built one. I didn't know what he meant until he told me your father was willing to sell it to us. Of course it came as a surprise seeing your father recently started it and it's doing good. I told him I'll talk to your father and get back to him.
"I was so busy with work that I couldn't get to talk to him that day and the next day I heard I had work in Russia so I had to leave. Alhaji Sani came to me saying I had to sign before leaving. Seeing the documents looked real, I signed them and left with the intention of talking to your father when I'm back.
"When I came back, I met the news of your..... Ahmm.... Your...... father's...ahmm.. death" He cleared his throat and continued "I was shocked at the same time hurt of loosing a friend. Then the announcement came of us buying the company. I finally thought that maybe your father saw this happening or it was the Lord's plan so I had no suspicion.
"Everything started going smoothly and I flight out even more often. Alhaji Sani decided to not keep me in the loop so I got angry and called him. He calmed me down saying you went over to see your mother in Yola and apart from that nothing happened. Days later, Hafeez called me shouting and saying why did I do what I did. I of course try explaining to him us buying this company is just like us promoting it but he wasn't having it. He thinks it's because of my own selfish interests.
"Things moved okay until the market started dropping. The people found the difference in the drinks and so stopped buying them. Everything stopped there was no profit. So Alhaji Sani suggested we launch a new drink to boost the business up. I confronted him saying if we can't do it why not hand it over to you, for the sake of the business but he wasn't having it. He said there was a woman from Yola who's slowly building you the refreshments company and wants to beat his and he couldn't take any chances so he's launching it in the next two days.
"Angrily, I left him to his choices and hours later I met Hafeez. I knew we rarely have any discussion and so I decided to talk to him both about the company and about your engagement. That was when he told me everything ranging from the low purchase of house and company, the likely forged signatures, the attacks and everything else. To say I was shocked will be an understatement. I never knew about this, all that was his plan and we are all a pawn in his game.
"Just then his secretary came and told me to stop him. He said Alhaji Sani is going to far and he has done enough damage. I thought he was talking about how he fooled me to be partners with him, tricked your father , forged signatures, driven you out of the house, sent terrorists after you. But Humaira I was wrong, he did a big damage that could never be repaired"
I stared at him as my lips move, my voice finally finding it's way before I whispered "What?
His eyes darted to Hafeez who looked at him with nervousness and assurance before he took a deep breath and readied himself. Then carefully whispered
"He killed your father"
And the world stilled!
