The diary of Amy Thomas.
I leant into his shoulder, he put his arm around me. The sunset was sparkling against the sea, the cold wind was blowing in our faces but we didn’t mind. The sea was gently crashing against the waves and came closer to feet, in the end it was tickling my feet so we decided to move. As we walked, the seagulls were squawking while flying over our heads, we could feel the soft wet sand drying under our feet.
If you are wondering who I am, my name is Amy Thomas, I moved here from America last year when I was sixteen. Now I’m seventeen. It’s my eighteenth in two months, me and my boyfriend Jamie Lewis are so excited. Jamie acts tough but he is a real big softy.
It started to go dark so Jamie said to go home so we did. When we got into the car and we started to drive, it was like a carnival, none of the lights were working properly they were all flashing! The roar of the car was like a giant lion was sitting on top it. Then as we were driving the front lights went off.
It wasn’t pitch black, but there was only a few street lights working and very little cars on the road. It was ten minutes to my house and thirty minutes to Jamie’s.
I told him to stop and call the AA but he wouldn’t listen and just drove on. When we came to my house I told him he could stay the night and get the car fixed in the morning but he wouldn’t listen.
He said, ‘I’ll be fine, I’ll see you in the morning to go out into town.’
He gave me a kiss goodnight and walked out. I watched him as he strolled down my drive into his car and along my street.
I am in bed writing this, I can’t wait to see Jamie tomorrow.
Forty minutes passed and there had been no call from Jamie so I decided to go to sleep.
I got up at ten o’clock and still Jamie hadn’t called.
I said to myself ‘I’ll give him another hour.’
An hour passed and he still hadn’t called, so i called his mobile and it went straight to answering machine. I started to panic. Where was he? He was never late before. The phone rang, I didn’t answer it quick enough, I thought it was probably Jamie apologizing for being late, my mother called me.
‘Yes he called, he’s just late!’ I shouted at the top of my voice.
My mother shouted, ‘Quick, the phone’s for you and it sounds important.’
I ran down the stairs grabbed the phone and ran back upstairs. ‘Jamie?’ I said.
A man said, ‘No, I’m not Jamie.’
‘Oh sorry I thought you were my boyfriend Jamie’ I said.
He then said ‘I know who Jamie is.’
There was a long pause between us both, I had no idea who he was, but then he went to say something.
‘I’m sorry, I should have introduced myself. I’m Matt Lewis, Jamie’s uncle and now carer since his parents died.’
I started to breathe very heavily and I asked ‘Is there anything wrong.’
There was no answer for a long time then the phone went dead.
I called 1471 but the phone number was withheld, I had to know if anything had happened. The tears started rolling down my face just thinking about it, then the phone rang.
I answered ‘Hello?’
It was one of those stupid insurance calls.
So I Shouted down the phone ‘We’ve got insurance, and we don’t want anymore!’ Then I hung up.
I waited by the phone for an hour and it didn’t make a sound, it was like the whole world stopped and went silent.
I’m really worried. Why hasn’t Matt called? What’s happened? Where is he? Why did he call? All those questions were running through my head.
I decided to walk to Jamie’s and see if he or his uncle were there. I rang the doorbell, a tall man with black hair, baggy jeans and a bright pink t-shirt answered the door and said ‘I’m Jamie’s uncle, you must be Amy.’
My heart stopped, what was I going to say? I managed to speak.
I said ‘Do you know where Jamie is?’
He said ‘I don’t know how to put this.’
Tears came rolling down my face, my mascara was running with them.
‘Jamie’s in the hospital after he dropped you off at your house last night.’
I broke down into tears, I couldn’t believe it, it was all my fault.
I asked tearfully ‘Could you take me to the hospital to see him?’
He said very politely, ‘Yes I would love to.’
While we were driving, he put the radio on, it was all over the news, I got upset again. When we made it to the hospital, my legs were like jelly, I couldn’t make it out of the car. When I finally got the strength back in my legs they took me to Jamie’s room, Matt and the nurse.
We were outside the door I was asked if I wanted to go in the room alone, I said yes. It took me a while to get the guts to walk in, but in the end I did. As I walked into the room, all I could hear was the loud, short beeps of the life support machine, the cuts on Jamie’s face stood out like lightning in the night sky. I fell towards him, tears rolling off my face onto his.
I started to panic as the beeps from the machine got faster and faster, then there was a long beep. I screamed, Matt and the nurse ran in. The nurse called the doctors while I got taken outside. I could see the doctors using the shock pads on him three times. Nothing. My face hit the floor, I couldn’t breathe, I thought I was going to be swimming in my tears. The nurse came, helped me up and asked, ‘Do you want to come and say goodbye?’
I screamed ‘NO!’
She took me to the family room to calm me down and she stayed there with me until I had.
She asked me again ‘Do you want to come and say goodbye.’
I said ‘No, can you ask Matt to take me home please.’
When I went home I ran up to my bedroom and cried.
I have cried for four days straight and I just can’t stop, I need to stop. I want to be up there with him, he’s got the good life now. I’ve got to do it, I can’t back out now, I’m coming Jamie!
