Chapter 23: all you had to do was stay

"Harry, you have to eat. It's been over 24 hours since you last touched food." Liam tried to coax, only yet again being met by a blank stare.

"He left me." Harry said, sliding the kitchen chair back with a loud scrape, "Just now, too. He just had to make it sting."

Liam sighed, rubbing his temples, "H, he's getting married tomorrow. Did you expect him to be able to stay and coddle you back to health? He would've if he could've."

Harry snorted, "You know when you care about someone, you stay with them no matter the situation, Liam."

"Harry-" Liam tried but he had already exited the room.

He very well remembered the conversation he held with Louis the night before. How he desperately tried to convince Louis that leaving would only make the situation worse. But nothing could convince the Doncaster lad to change his mind.

An hour before Harry woke up that day, Louis had handed Liam an envelope with Harry's name scrawled on it before a quick hug and nod. He hadn't heard from him, and he hadn't given Harry the letter.

He didn't want to think about what was inside.

Harry didn't really like to think about everything that had happened in 24 hours.

But it was hard not to.

"Niall, he left because he's a selfish bastard. That's the only reason." He sighed into the phone, using his shoulder to balance it as he searched through his bathroom supplies for his shaving cream.

"You're speakin like you two were a couple. He's not attached to you, ya know. You two barely get along, you're speaking like he walked out on a two year relationship." Niall pointed out, a crash coming from his line.

"What was that? And where are you? It's weird over here."

"Some of us actually eat, mate. I'm hanging with Zayn right now I'll be back soon. I'll talk to ya later. By the way, are you coming to the wedding?"

Harry, to be honest, hadn't even thought of the wedding. In four days he had a funeral, one he couldn't think about without crying. But tomorrow, Louis was getting married.

"I don't think so." Harry said as he hung up, quickly busying himself with shaving his face.

A soft knock broke Harry from his train of thought about all the songs he'd ever played in the dance studio.

"How you feeling Harry? I ordered some dinner, you hungry?" Liam asked, Harry opened his mouth to decline, but was quickly interrupted, "No isn't an option, c'mon it's Chinese."

Harry reluctantly stood up, leading himself to the couch where a feast of Chinese food lay on the coffee table

"I didn't really know what you liked." Liam sheepishly admitted, seeing the look on Harry's face.

Harry smiled softly, "Thank you Liam. "

"It's really nothing, just some orange chicken and Lo Mei-"

"No I mean, thanks for putting up with me. I know I'm not the easiest person to deal with, and it's only gonna get harder from here. As of now, it doesn't really feel like this is all happening, you know? I feel like if I went to the hospital right now she'd be in her room, reading some teen magazine and then she'd tell me everything it said about me. I don't think I'm gonna be able to handle seeing her-" His voice cracked, "dead."
