You lean against the register, waiting for the young child in front of you to decide which ice cream flavor they want.
"I'll try... USS Butterscotch," the kid says. You groan and rub your eyes.
"Erika, you tried that already," you tell her. She shrugs and puts her hands on her hips sassily.
"Let me repeat myself. USS butterscotch," Erika says with an attitude. You sigh and grab another little spoon for sampling. You scoop a little bit of the ice cream and hand it to her. She eats it, sighing in contemplation before handing you the spoon. "That's just not it, how about cotton candy?" You glare at her, about to give her a piece of your mind before Robin walks out.
"Ok you little brat, no more samples," she says, taking the clean mini spoon from your hand and putting it back in the cup. "Either buy something, or get lost. N/N, go take your break." Diverting the last sentence to you, you listen. You nod gratefully at your friend before walking to the break room.
Robin and you worked today, while Steve— the other worker— took today off. He was supposed to work today, but he called you and said for you to 'make your move.' He was the only person beside yourself who knew of the major crush you had on your female coworker.
You and Steve had always been friends, and he always had a hunch that you liked girls. The truth finally came out two weeks before graduation. It was a party, and you were more than a little tipsy. He had stayed sober and was driving you home when you finally shared your attraction to ladies. He was much less than shocked, and told you about it the text morning.
He was very supportive, always trying to get you a girlfriend or at very least, a date. You always said 'no,' you had your eyes on Robin for years. She just carried herself in a certain way, and was so unapologetically herself, you didn't know how someone could not have a massive crush on her. She was the one that really made you question your sexual identity.
And now you're here, scooping ice cream for rude little kids with your crush of three years. How life worked in funny ways.
You grab an apple that was kept in the small refrigerator and plop down in a chair. The metal was cool on your back, making you sigh in contention. You take a bite of the apple, and groan when the phone you had on the wall behind you rings.
You stand up and walk over to the phone. Robin opens the little window connected the two rooms.
"You got it?" She asks, leaning against the opening. You smile at her. How could you not smile at the beautiful person in front of you?
"Yeah I got it." You pick up the phone from the receiver. "This is Scoops Ahoy! you're talking with Y/N." Robin sighs and closes the window when she hears the annoying ding from the register bell.
"Y/N, it's Steve," Steve says from the line. You knit your brows in confusion.
"Oh, hey, what's up?"
"Did you do it?" He asks. Your eyebrows slowly move higher up.
"Do... what?" You ask uncertainly. He sighs in frustration.
"Tell Robin you love her!" You glance at the window to make sure she wasn't there. When you see she's still talking with the young teens at the register, you answer.
"First, I don't love her. Second, no, I didn't say anything," you whisper in the phone. Steve sighs, and you could picture him pinching the bridge of his nose.
"You do love her, tell her! Hell, if you don't I will for you!" You look at the window again with paranoia.
"Steven Harrington," you start with a mean tone. "If you say anything, I'll personally kick you in the shins." He laughs.
"Fine," he mutters out, dragging the 'I' slightly. "Just tell her. I can't stand the way you two look at each other anymore."
"What do you mean?" He sighs loudly for the tenth time in the last five minutes.
"What do you mean 'what do you mean?!' She obviously likes you back!" You shake your head, although he doesn't see.
"She does not," you say with narrowed eyes. "She didn't even know I existed before we started working together. And she's probably straight!" You say in defeat and disappointment and start playing with the curly telephone cord.
"Look, N/N. If she doesn't like you, then at least you'll know," he tells you, suddenly having a softer tone. "Why live with the curiosity?" You nod and put on a face of determination.
"You know what? You're right! Screw it, I'm doing it!" Steve laughs.
"Good luck!" He says right before hanging up. You put the phone back up and walk back to the front.
"Hey, long call. Who was it?" Robin asks you with a curious look. You shake your head and wave your hand a little to show it didn't matter.
"No one special. I have to tell you something though, ready to close up?" Robin nods. "You change and I'll close." Robin walks to the back. You close the metal gate at the entrance and start worrying.
What is she doesn't like you back? Worse, what if she's not even into girls? What if she's disgusted by you? Your thoughts are cut short by Robin walking back out. She has a tee shirt on and jean shorts, and her hair is tied in a bun. She's so fucking cute.
"You can go change, I'll wait here for you." You nod and hastily go into the back room to change. You grab the bag with your clothes and throw your uniform off quickly. You never gotten changed so fast. You walk back out with your discarded uniform in the bag over your shoulder. "That was fast. What did you want to tell me?"
"W-well, uhh," you stammer, forgetting English in the few seconds you've been in Robin's presence. "This may be a long shot, and might make things really awkward but— Ireallylikeyouasinmorethanafriendandwouldr-eallyliketogooutonadatewithyou!" She looks at you in shock and amusement. She walks up to you and you cover your burning cheeks with your palms.
She laughs a little and removes your hands from your face. You look up to her shimmering blue eyes. Her face is serious, and her cheeks are dusted with pink.
"Not sure how I understood anything you just told me but," she tucks a piece of hair behind your ear, "I like you too. I would really like to go out with you." She smiles, and you smile back. She leans her face to your's slightly.
"Can I kiss you?" You mumble almost against her lips. She answers by pressing her lips to your's. You inhale through your nose in surprise, but melt into the kiss. You kiss back with the same passion.
The kiss leaves you panting for air. Robin leans her forehead on your's and closes her eyes for a moment, smiling bashfully. She rests her arms on your hips and you rest your's on her shoulders.
"Saturday good? At the diner?" She asks and opens her eyes. You nod and peck her lips one last time.
"Need a ride home?"
