A/N: This is going to be a mini series. The next two chapters are going to be an end where you stay with Jonathan, and one where you end up with Billy. Also, Upside Down stuff never happened in this series. Enjoy!
You stand by your car with tears in your eyes as you look at your boyfriend, Jonathan Byers. He looks just as sad, a matching frown on his face.
Today was the day you left for college in San Diego, California. After waiting a year after graduating, working late night after night to save enough money, it was finally time. You just had a going away party with your child friends, boyfriend, and family. They all already said goodbye, and left you and Jonathan alone.
Your bags were packed and in the trunk. Jonathan's forehead rested against your's as silent tears ran down both of your faces. It was harder to say bye than you expected.
"I'll call every chance I get, promise," you say, your voice uneven. He nods.
"I'll call you too." You wrap your arms around him tighter. "I'll miss you, so, so much," he says with a voice sounding just as bad as your's.
"I'll miss you, too. I love you, Jonathan Byers." He buries his face in your neck. "I'll come for Christmas and stay until New Years. And you need to mail me pictures of the kids on Halloween! I know they're older, but just a picture of them watching a horror movie, or something."
"I will," he murmurs, his hand idling playing with your hair. "I love you, too."
"I have to go, babe. Cali is a thirty hour drive," you say after another moment of standing there in peace, the late summer breeze blowing through your hair. Jonathan pulls away from you. His face is red and puffy, and you don't look much better.
"You'll call when you get there, right?" He asks after pulling away and taking your hand in his. The pad of his thumb brushes your knuckles.
"The second I step into my apartment." You let go of his hand and open the car door you've been leaning on. He captures your lips with his, and you kiss back with the same force. He leans back and wipes a tear from your face. "Goodb—"
"No, don't say 'goodbye.' That makes it seem like forever," he cuts you off. You smile through your tears. "Christmas, remember?"
"Then... I'll see you later, my love." He smiles back at you.
"See you later," he says back. You look to the window of your house and wave to the friends and family. They wave back, shouting 'bye!' or 'good luck in college!' Jonathan steps back for you to get in the car. You do, and open your window.
"This isn't 'goodbye,'" you point out with a smile. He nods, shoving his hands in his pockets. "I'll talk to you soon."
"Yeah, we will. Now go before I jump in the car with you," Jonathan jokes. You laugh slightly, although it sounds a little forced. He walks backwards to the sidewalk. You wave at him one last time before you take off to California.
You drive for hours, listening to whatever comes on the radio and changing the station every once in a while. Eventually, the music gives you a headache and you turn it down. You drive for another hour like this, wizzing past trees and small houses with the barely audible music.
You could barely hear it, yet you immediately recognize the beginning notes of 'Should I Stay Or Should I Go?'
You smile to yourself and turn up the radio as loud as possible, not minding the ache in your head anymore. You sing every lyric, thinking of all the times you and Jonathan would dance around in his room to this song.
