He loved the ocean.
Couldn't get enough of it, even. Although, the town talked. That's what small towns do. They talk about the rich and fortunate, thinking that it'll bring them down and lift themselves up.
If you didn't already connect the dots, Garroth's family is one of the only rich families, and to escape that life, he goes to the ocean. People say it's because he's self-conceited, and egotistical, needing to see his own beauty. Some say that he loves to tell the ocean all of the town's dirty secrets to share to the world, traveling to other islands.
Sometimes, their guesses are true. He doesn't think he's that handsome, so he goes to see it through the ocean's beauty. It helps him cope with his self-confidence issues. Other times, they're so very wrong, making his blood boil with anger. All he wanted to do was to enjoy the waves crashing onto the shore at sunset and to feel the wind blow through his sandy blonde hair. It helps him calm, and to collect thoughts. His brothers loved other things about nature, so they went to their own respective places when angry or upset. He was happy for that.
One day he had walked down to the ocean a little after dinner. Garroth had went outside to the town and was walking around beforehand, and had overheard some of the townspeople talking. Apparently, his long-term crush had gotten an arranged marriage and was going to be sent off to her fiancé in the morning. People knew of his liking towards her, and avoided conversation about her when they knew he was around. Drama spreads like a plague, sooner or later you'll get your fair share of it.
Garroth skipped a rock across the water, getting it to skip three times before falling in. He wasn't in the mood to sleep, but he didn't want to think about her. Everyone in his family respected that, and kept the beach empty for times like these.
However, he wasn't the only one who longed for something, and couldn't have it. It was oddly similar, and this boy's family fully supported him for his decision. They were one of the very few families that kept out of drama central, keeping their noses in their own business. Except their young boy. He was curious to learn more about his pouting crush. He knew that the blonde loved the ocean, and his cerulean eyes made that match him perfectly. His sandy blonde hair could get lost in the sand if it wasn't for how soft and fluffy it looked.
Laurance had never actually touched Garroth, or talked to him at that. He enjoyed just staring from a far. He knew he'd tumble over his own words, and that would make him never wanna try and talk to the blonde again. His family would have paid for a speech tutor to help with his stuttering, but they weren't the richest family out there. By far, though, he wasn't the poorest either. His family had just enough money for essentials, and a few wants every now and again.
"You here to make fun of me? Ridicule me? Go ahead, at least this time I'll hear it said to my face instead of behind my back." His attention turned back to the blonde now sitting down on the sand, staring out into the depths of the ocean. His mind processed what he had said and realized that his crush had noticed him.
Laurance rubbed the back of his neck and walked up to the blonde with a shy smile. Garroth never looked up at him, even as Laurance sat down beside him. "N-No... I-I wasn't."
They stayed silent, enjoying the silence between the two. As much as Garroth was afraid to admit it, this guy gave off a comforting vibe that was just what he needed. Especially after Aphmau had willingly, excitedly even, accepted to marry Katelynn Firefist. He gripped onto the sand below him. Laurance took notice of this and worriedly looked into Garroth's cerulean eyes for the first time up close.
"Y-You o-o-ok?" Garroth met his gaze before closing his eyes tightly and breathing a sigh.
"Not really. You a type of person to listen?" Laurance nodded. He wanted make Garroth feel better, and would try anything to put a smile back onto his face. "Do you gossip any?"
