Chapter 25: Okay
My hands twitched as we stood in front of the enormous mansion.
Hanging proudly on my body was my penny costume and my backpack underneath (for where I can carry my books when I get bored. And my shovel) and Audrey wore a denmin jacket that had the word "Responsibilities" tapped on her chest. Mother waved to us good bye and drove off, leaving us in front of the gate rather than the house because she wanted to save gas money.
"We have to walk all the way over there?" Audrey scowled and groaned. She crossed her arms and glared at the bright, shining mansion far in front of us. It poured eerie red lights out from the window and blasted halloween music into the atmosphere. Her frown deepened. "Why did I agree to come?"
"So you can watch over me," I quipped. We began our very long journey to the mansion.
"Isn't that your friend's job?"
"You're my friend."
She snorted, but she didn't deny it.
After I had left my room, something had been bothering me and it had been a constant itch since then. It was like a scab I couldn't pick, an itch I couldn't scratch, and it left me greatly unsettled. Restless.
Audrey's parents hurt her.
They've hurt her by killing themselves.
But I couldn't do anything about it. I couldn't change the expression she was making when she talked about them. The pain, anger, and sorrow shifted and blurred into an unbearable memory.
It reminded me of something.
A face, a clock, a candle, a smile
A look, a minute, a flame, a frown
Quiet as the night, loud as the day
Loud on the ground and quiet in the grave
Be still as the dead, but never forget
The secrets, the treasures, the precious forevers
Deep down in the soil and hear its scream,
Its plea, its dream,
And dig and discover its bittersweet spoil.
One feet.
Two feet.
Three feet.
Four feet.
Five feet.
Six feet.
"Penny?"
...
I blinked.
"Huh?"
"We're here," she said. One of her brow was lifted. How'd she do that? "Are you going to keep staring at the door, or what?"
Oh.
"It's a nice door," I said. There were Halloween decoration plastered all over the wood. "A very nice door."
Audrey squinted at me with an odd look. "Um, okay..."
We entered in.
"Yay! You guys are here!" Alleny squealed almost child-like and she nearly hugged us when both of us flinched. "Whoops! Sorry. I almost forgot that you guys aren't the touchy-type," she laughed.
