Chapter 21: Bus RideBeads of sweat trickled precariously down my forehead, paying no mind where it landed as piles and piles of dirt accumulated on top of the prickly brown grass of my backyard. Blisters formed on my palms and heavy breaths filled the dark silent sky, the light not yet broken through the horizon.
"What the hell are you doing?"
I stopped digging.
I turned around and I was met with a very confused, bewildered Audrey who was standing right by the sliding door. Her eyes shifted from me, to the gaping hole on the ground, to the piles of dirt, and then back to me.
"I'm digging," I said.
"Why?"
I blinked at her. And then I shrugged.
"Huh..." She walked over towards me barefoot and in her uniform. I could see the glistening wet shine of her freshly washed hair and smell the sweet floral scent which further amplified her presence. Her head peered over at my handywork and then at me. "You do know it's five in the morning, right?"
"It is?"
She huffed and mumbled something incoherently under her breath. "Have I ever told you how weird you are?"
"Several times," I said. I continued digging.
She watched me for awhile, narrowing her brows in bewilderment.
She coughed. "You know, I've seen you do this several times before. Is this a usual thing, or...?"
I shrugged again.
My hands continued to move the dirt out from the ground with my miniature shovel as my knees stayed planted on the earthy soil. I'm not sure why I was digging a hole on the ground. I just wanted to. I had to. And I think it's fun.
My hands were getting dirty and my arms started to feel like dead weight from the strenuous abuse, but I persisted, not wanting to stop until I've felt satisfied with my work. Audrey hummed in response and crouched down next to me.
Several weeks had passed since we've done that hugging bonding thing that I forced her to do. I ended up sleeping on her bed with the lights on and my mother walked in on us when we haven't gone to the kitchen after she had called us several times for breakfast. I knew Audrey felt embarrassed when that happened because her face had turned exponentially red while my mother quirked a brow at the sight of us. Mother had quickly dismissed it and told us food was ready and walked out.
Anyways, today was Halloween.
"Did you also know that we have school today?" she asked.
"Yup," I said as I popped the 'p.' I did some finishing touches with my burrow and I smiled in complacency. "There. I'm all done."
"Great," she said sarcastically. She shivered and rubbed her arms together. Puffs of fog drifted from her mouth as she got up and patted her long dark red skirt down. "God, you're weird."
I placed the piles of dirt back into its original spot.
After I've walked back into the house, cleaned my shovel, folded it, placed it back into my backpack, and showered, I sat on the counter in my kitchen and watched Audrey pack up her food.
"It's kind of weird seeing you so early in the morning," she started and went to grab two bowls from the cabinet. She poured this healthy brand cereal my mother always buy and milk into the bowls and handed me one along with a spoon. I thanked her and dug right in. "So," she began, enlongating the "o" for several seconds, "where'd you get the shovel?"
