I used my week off perfectly. I finished all my work, organized it on paper and on my laptop, went through everything a lot of times and all that's left now is doing some practice of the presentation. After that conversation I had with Downey I felt like my mind was free to work again. It's like a burden got off my shoulders. But in reality it didn't. I know he cheated on his wife and I feel guilty for not saying anything. Not that I can find her. I haven't even met her. I only saw her once at an office party where she came with Downey.
I get ready after one whole week of working from home and leave my house. I admit I feel excited to go back. The feeling of waking up at 7 am is not my favourite but at least today I feel better about it. I get back into my office and sit on my chair with confidence. It's the first time after a few weeks that I don't have a ton of work to do. First of all I start with going through my slides for the presentation once again before starting looking for some audience while I'm practicing.
It doesn't take long for the first knock on my door to appear. It's a colleague bringing me some files. A few minutes later another knock on the door catches my attention and this time is Malcolm who enters my office with a bright smile on his lips.
"I can't believe my eyes, you're back" he jokes and takes a seat.
"It was about time, wasn't it?"
"How did you manage to get a week off? I've never heard of anyone getting more than two days off without calling in sick or having work outside the office" he sounds so excited.
"Downey said it would help me with my work and turns out he was right. I finished everything" I say proudly.
"So Downey just heard about your presentation and gave you a whole week off?" he asks in disbelief.
"Pretty much, yes" I smile, obviously avoiding mentioning about catching him cheating.
"I should get myself a presentation like this, I could really use a week off" he laughs.
"If you feel like it you can help me with mine. I need someone later in conference room 3 while I'm practicing my presentation to give me notes and an honest opinion"
"Sure, I can do that. Let me know when you need me"
After we agree on it he leaves and I go get my cup of coffee. The conference room is not available for a few hours so I get back to my work mainly replying my emails and going through the files I got earlier. When it's finally my turn to have the conference room I get everything ready and call Malcolm. He arrives a couple of minutes later and takes a seat on the huge table.
"Nervous?" he asks me probably reading my body language.
"Only a tiny part of me" I exhale and present my first slide.
"Show me what you've got" he says and I nod.
We both switch to our professional sides and I start explaining and presenting my work. The more time that passes by the more comfortable I feel about it and I present everything with more confidence. Malcolm actually gave me some helpful advice and also helped me fill some parts with more information. We were in the room for a while which sounds boring and tiring but in reality it was fun. These last weeks would have been so much easier and entertaining if I had Malcolm for help.
"Here you can see the charts for the previous results" I say pointing at the charts and realize that I'm done.
"And, well, that's all" I chuckle happily.Malcolm gives me a satisfied grimace and then claps smiling which makes me laugh and shake my head to his reaction.
"Seriously, what do you think?" I ask him.
