Today's the day. It's the end of the week, it's almost 2 pm and everything's ready for my presentation. The investors are all having a seat on the huge table and I'm waiting for the final minute until I have to get in the conference room. I take a deep breath and get in with as much confidence as I can collect. My heels make loud noise with each step I take. I arrive at my spot and leave my stuff on the desk next to the laptop. I take a look at everyone and now they're all focused on me. Before, I could hear some of them chatting but now there's only silence. The blinds are closed and it's dark in the room until I turn on my slides.
"Thank you all for coming, my name is Olivia Beck, I'm in charge of today's presentation" I say smiling and I see them smiling back at me and nodding their heads.
I start with my first slide and even though I practiced it I feel a bit uptight. So many eyes on me at the same time are making me feel uncomfortable. Strangers' eyes. By the time I'm on the third slide I realize how important this is and remember how hard I worked on it so I gain more and more confidence. I try to read their faces to see if I'm earning their trust but it's hard. They seem focused on me and what I say but since it's my first time doing something so important I can't really tell if this is going well.
"Excuse me for being late, I was having a very important call" Downey says entering the room.
For a moment I freeze. I wasn't expecting him to be here. No one told me he would be here. I don't even think he's needed here. Since most of the seats are taken and he needs to walk a lot to get in a free one, he finally sits on a chair on the side of the table away from everyone else. My eyes have been following his every move ever since he got in the room. I smile at him and clear my throat to concentrate again.
I repeat my last sentence to remind everyone what I was saying before Downey interrupted us. I'm feeling his eyes on me even though I'm not looking at him. I try to make eye contact with the investors, just like Downey siggested I should. My eyes also meet his and the look he gives me gets me weak on my knees. He's so serious and focused on me. He's bouncing up and down his chair but his eyes are stuck on me. I have to break the eye contact with him within a couple of seconds otherwise I'm afraid I won't be able to continue speaking anymore.
I avoid looking at him for the rest of the presentation. I decided that that's the best way to do my work in the best possible way. It felt interesting knowing that he has his full attention on me. I knew that he was watching me and I hoped that he was wanting the eye contact to continue as much as I did. I was no longer nervous at all. The few uncomfortable feelings I had were replaced by the sweet rush of him being around for me.
My project was finished way much faster and easier than I expected. And by the end I had a proud vibe around me. I felt good with myself. All that's left now is to find out if all this paid off. On Monday morning we'll know if I truly convinced any of them. I shake my hand and thank every single one of them. Downey is also having a small conversation with some of them before they leave the room. After the last one gets out Downey shuts the door and comes over to me.
"I'm very impressed by your work, Ms. Beck" he says with a deep voice.
He stands against the table wearing his fancy dark suit. I can't believe my eyes. He looks so good.
"Thank you, Mr. Downey. I didn't know you'd be here" I reply and stand against my own desk.
We're facing each other. Looking at one another. This time, though, we manage to keep the eye contact for more than a couple of seconds.
"Would you have done anything different if you knew I was going to be here?" he stands up and starts taking slow steps towards me.
He crosses his arms and manages to become even more appealing. Maybe that has to do with the fact that I can now smell his perfume. I'm starting getting really attached to this scent.
