A theatre is a magical place, Haru had no doubt on that. What fascinated her the most about it was the possibility to become someone else every time she performed: every character she played, no matter how small or big it was, was like a stranger she wanted to befriend, a new personality she tried to know as thoroughly as possible. As cheesy as it may sound, she re-discovered herself every time she was on stage. The characters she played never abandoned her: they were always there, in a corner of her mind, ready to come out as a new side of her when needed.
And in that instant, as she was looking at the cast list for the new show, she wished she could've murdered someone in cold blood, full-on Lady Macbeth style.
"This must to be a joke..." she sighed, trying not to cry on the spot.
She had auditioned for Heather Chandler. Ever since she was informed that her theatre group was going to hit the stage with one of her favorite musicals, "Heathers" she knew she wanted to play Heather Chandler. Her lines were powerful, she had the right range to sing her parts, and to be honest she only wanted to be able to shout the iconic "shut up Heather!" every chance she got.
Why, then, was she stuck with Veronica Sawyer?
"No way, you got the lead! Lucky..." Soojin beamed, convinced that Haru would've shared her enthusiasm. However, she certainly did not.
"But I wanted Chandler..." Haru scoffed, running a hand through her hair in frustration. She stepped aside to let her friend see her role.
"Well, it looks like I'm Heather Duke!" Soojin exclaimed, "Now I have an excuse to be mean to everyone!"
Haru managed to laugh. Heather Duke's character was the exact opposite of her friend: but she knew, as an actress, that even the sweetest person could impersonate a villain if they put their efforts into it.
"No way... look who's playing Heather McNamara!" Haru exclaimed, as her smile grew bigger. Her friend Joy was cast as Heather M: at least she got what she wanted. Joy had been wanted to play that character forever, she found it was one of the few that was totally underrated. Haru understood that, and she was happy for her. Everything comes way easier when your character is more like your actual self: Joy was a total sweetheart, and so was Heather M.
"Haru!" a voice called, "Is that the cast list?"
She turned around to see Song Mingi, another member of the troupe, running towards her. She nodded, only to be basically shoved off the way by the larger guy.
"Sorry, I got too excited..." he apologized, then started searching for his own name "Hey! I'm playing Kurt Kelly! And Seonghwa is playing Ram Sweeney!"
"Excited about playing a character that is a huge dick, I see" Haru commented, her sarcastic tone eliciting a small laugh form the guy.
"Who? Me, who drinks respect- for- women- juice first thing in the morning?" he paused "...Yeah, kinda" he admitted, his gummy smile on full display now.
"Did you see the rest of the list, Haru?" Soojin asked, her eyes staring at the bottom of the list.
"Well this dude," she said, pointing at Mingi "basically shove me to the other side of the room so, no I didn't"
"It's better if you don't"
Soojin was looking at her with worry in her eyes, and she didn't like that. Her friend backed off so Haru could get closer and take a proper look at the entire cast list.
