[17] The Current State

Kizuna's Pov

I'm at the bridge with Sakura, daydreaming about her beloved Sasuke.

"Hey! Where's that weird blonde kid and that emo one with an attitude?" I laugh at the description.

"They're training. Climbing trees" Sakura replied.

"Too tough for you two?" He ask playfully.

"No. Infact, we're the best! That's why sensei sent us here to guard you" Sakura said proudly.

"You're joking"

"Ahhhhh! How dare you underestimate us just because we're girls?!" I roll my eyes on her and start to head into a couples of wood. I start to make clones and lift some up and bring them to some workers. I can hear some thanks here and there as I continue to help them.

"What are you doing, Kizuna-chan? Isn't royals always keep their hands clean?" I sigh at her as I pinch her cheeks lightly.

"Who said I'm a royal? There's no such things as that. Nobles do but not royals" I said as I look at her.

"Well, you do look like one. But Kizuna-chan, how did you know Sasuke-kun at the first place? You two looks close even in the beginning of class before" now, she's curious.

"Villages doesn't only have ally to maintain, clans too, you know. In my case, my clan have to maintain the ally relationship between my clan and the Uchihas. That's how we met" I simply explain. I don't like to tell my life story to someone whose reason she became a ninja is because she's obsessed with my childhood friend. I stand up and go back helping Mr Tazuna and the other workers.

"Tazuna. I need to talk to you" one of the workers said. I halt on my actions and started to listen to them.

"What about?"

"The thing is... Uh... I've been thinking a lot about the bridge. I've decided that I push my luck far enough. I want to quit"

"Now you're going to quit just like that? You're kidding" Mr Tazuna shouted angrily.

"You know I stayed on because of our friendship, but I'm putting my life on the line everyday I stay here. Gato and his tugs will show up eventually. When they do, they'll kill you and the bridge will never be finished anyway... It's a lost cause, Tazuna. Why don't we stop now while we can get out of this alive?" So that's the thing. Their courage to step up is getting smaller the longer they live in here because of the fear they felt from Gato's power over the Land of Waves. The bridge indeed is their only chance to be free from his influence.

"No chance. This is our bridge. Our island is poor, and it will stay so u fill this bridge connects to the main land. Commerce, Tfaid and Hope. That's what we're building here" Mr Tazuna said.

"There's not gonna be much hope if we're all dead"

"It's already noon. Let's take a break for lunch"

"Tazuna! Let's not end it like this"

"Save your breath... Oh and Gichii, don't bother coming back after lunch" Mr Tazuna said as he walk away.

"Um... Where are we going?" Sakura ask. We're currently walking through the streets of this island.

"You want to eat tonight, don't you? I got to pick up some things for dinner" Mr Tazuna said.

"Thief! Thief!" A voice cried out as a little boy has gone out of a shop with food on hand. As we walk further, I notice some kids, sitting together with nothingness.

"Here we are" we reach the shop.

"Welcome" I was shock at the place. The shop held few food. It's almost empty and there's not much to choose food around.

"Ya! You pervert!" Sakura shouted and I look to see her kick a man out.

"You okay, Sakura?" She just nodded. When Mr Tazuna is finished, we started heading back to his house.

"Wow! You really surprised me. Girls around here don't fight like that" Mr Tazuna complimented.

"Well, they should. Something's seriously wrong in here" she answered. I feel some presence behind us.

"You bastard!" I hold Sakura's hand before could even do something. The presence was a little boy.

"Please?" He said as we lay out his hand. Sakura grab something from her pouch as I open my own to get a small pack bag.

"Here!" I said. Sakura on the other hand, gave him some candies.

"Thank you!" He said as he run away happily.

"What did you give?"

"Something that could sustain him for a few more days"

"Is it food or something much more?"

"Don't be so worried, Sakura. Nobles have their own way of helping" I said and hurry up to Mr Tazuna.

"But still, it's sad watching the kids like this"

"This is how it's been since Gato came here... The children suffer and the adults are afraid to stand up against him. They have lost hope. That's why we have to finish the bridge. It will bring commerce and traids. And much more importantly, that bridge is the symbol of courage. We must restore the spirit of our people. When the bridge is finished, people will start to believe again. They'll believe that they can live with dignity. We can't let Gato stop us" I nod in satisfaction.

'We'll bring back the courage and strength to these people, I swear'
