'No student is allowed to have a seat. Not just yet,' my English teacher shouts out as we all enter the room. It's the second day, and my first English class. Apparently, the same goes for Alaric, Vincent, and Sabastian.

Julian and I wait near a bunch of seats for further instructions, and I ignore the way Alaric and his friends are glaring at me. It's the lesson right after breaktime when I was in the library, and I desperately want to put my bag down because all the books in it have made it extremely heavy.

I might even shrink.

When everyone's inside, the teacher closes the door and gives us all a creepy smile. She's a sweet-looking, old lady, and she has a glint of what seems like mischief dancing in her eyes.

'I'm Fiona Grand. Or Ms Grand. I'll be your English teacher for this year,' her smile doesn't waver and she looks at every student as if she's examining them.

'I'll be telling you all where to sit,' she says happily with a clap of her hands, and everyone groans. She doesn't seem to care. The desks are in pairs, and she starts naming students and pointing to desks. Vincent gets placed next to Quentin from the locker room, and Sebastian has to sit with her friend, Clementine. None of them are upset with their pairs. They seem quite the contrary.

I end up sitting with a cute, curly-haired blond guy with a sweet smile. Ms Grand seems to be placing everyone with the opposite gender. The last student standing is Alaric, who's leaning against the back wall of the room.

A girl with pin-straight black hair raises her hand and Ms Grand nods at her to talk.

'Ms Grand, where's Alaric going to sit?' she asks. She's sitting next to a raven-haired, plump guy.

Ms Grand smiles at her and turns to look at Alaric.

'Where would you like to sit, sweetie?' she asks, to my surprise. He's the only person she asked.

The one and only.

And, sweetie?

I narrow my eyes at them as everyone looks at Alaric.

'By myself, obviously,' his voice isn't even loud, but everyone hears him. He walks to a desk at the back of the room and sits, placing his bag on the seat beside him, making it clear that nobody can sit there.

And Ms Grand says nothing. Absolutely nothing. She just nods at him and moves back to the front of the room.

The guy next to me places his hand on my chin and pushes upwards, making me close my mouth. I grin at him sheepishly and he grins back. One of his front teeth is missing, and I don't know why or how, but that just makes him cuter. His eyes move behind me, and what he see's gets him scared because he snaps his head back to the front so quickly that I hear a feint snap. And he doesn't glance at me again. His eyebrows are furrowed so harshly I can't tell if they'll ever relax. And even the pencil he was chewing on is shaking in his hand.

I turn around to see what has him so tense, and I see Alaric glaring at the back of his head.

Rolling my eyes, I turn to the front where Ms Grand is clapping her hands excitedly again.

'Does anyone know what I've done here?' she asks, but doesn't give anyone the chance to answer her.

'I've placed you all with whoever I think will match!' she's practically jumping with enthusiasm.
