"That's the thing about pain. It demands to be felt." --- John Green

Everyone around me is in danger.

It's that time-of-the-month, and my bipolar side is in full effect.

I couldn't sleep all night, and if somebody messes with me, I probably won't like it.

I ignore the neighbour lady as I get into the car, my hair tied into a braid over my shoulder, with loose strands all over my face. All over the school, there're posters of the Halloween dance that's coming up. In EHI, every celebration has a dance. They're formal like that.

Mr Smith, my calculus teacher, drones on and on and I write furiously on my notebook, having forgotten my laptop at home today. Nearing the end of the lesson, an announcement plays on the speakers. It's an over-cheery office assistant:

'Hey everybody! I'm sure you've all seen the Halloween dance posters! Last year, the girls had to ask the guys, so this year, the guys can get thinking! You all know the rules. You have to go to the person and say "will you be my pumpkin". It's on Halloween night, obviously, on the top floor of the Gym building. You can't bring someone who's not from EHI. That's it for now. Get back to work.'

And to think my mood couldn't get worse...

I certainly can't go. It'd be like walking to my death. My social death. 'Cause who knows what could happen there?

I look around the room and scan all the guys. I know Alaric's glaring at me from the other side of he room, but I ignore him. And honestly, I don't want to ask any of the guys out. None of them are my type.

Whatever.

I have a future to focus on.

I continue solving the calculus equation, which I don't find very complicated. To be honest, I don't find many things hard. After my mother died and Alaric barged into my life, I didn't have any friends, so all I did was read and study. Some people stress-eat. Some stop eating. I stress-study. I studied every moment I got - because I simply had nothing else to do.

At breaktime, the entrance of the cafeteria is super crowded. And then everyone runs inside and surrounds the centre table. I rush in too, because I'm curious and a sucker for drama.

Pushing people away because I can't care less if they swear at me, I get to the front and watch as a huge group of girls ask Alaric, Vincent and Sebastian to the dance. It's guys-ask-girls, yet here we are. It's kind of heart-breaking, watching all the girls get rejected. After so confidently getting ready to ask them out, the girls get a no.

Suddenly, Sebastian gets up and stands on his seat, looking pissed, causing everyone to become silent.

'Listen up ladies. If we want to go to the dance with you, we'll ask you ourselves. Now go eat food or something,' he says, and reluctantly, all the girls leave.

I don't need to go to the library at the moment, 'cause I bought a huge stock of books from the money my father gave me, so I'm reading those now. A couple of minutes before the bell rings, I throw my yogurt in the bin and walk to my locker to get my books for the next lesson. When I reach to close it, somebody slams it shut for me.

Clementine.

She stands with her hand on my locker, a snarl on her face.

'Are you fucking him?' she spits out.

'My sex life is none of your business,' I tell her, and make to walk away, but she blocks my path.

'You better not be. Everyone knows he's obsessed with you for some reason. I don't know what spell you did to him,' she groans in frustration, pulling on her hair. 'Honestly I don't get why he's so into your freakish ass!'
