'Please?'

'No.'

'Pretty please?'

'No.'

Pleasepleasepleasepleaseplease!?' I practically beg.

He repeats 'No,' without sparing me a glance.

I sigh, walk over to Lola, and try to lift her myself. I'm groaning and whining and gasping as I stumble to the door with her in my arms, and suddenly, she's gone from my arms and Alaric's glaring at me, holding her away from his body.

I mean, he's strong enough. More than enough.

'What?' I huff, placing my hands on my waist.

'Why'd you pick her up?'

'Because you didn't. Duh!' I say, rolling my eyes.

'You didn't say you were going to pick her! Why can't we just leave her here?' he asks, scrunching his nose as he looks at her.

'We can't leave her! She's my friend!' I pout. 'Don't you care about her wellbeing?'

He gives me an are-you-kidding look and says 'Not one bit.'

I scoff and drop my arms from my waist. 'Well, at least you're honest. Let's go. I care about her, which means you're going to have to help her get home.'

I open the door and walk out, not turning back to make sure he's following.

Because I know he is.

And that knowledge alone makes me smile.

I gently strap her to the back seat of Alaric's car and then settle in the passengers seat, clicking my seatbelt in.

''So, how'd you find me?' I ask out of curiosity, and to distract myself from Lola.

'All my cars have trackers.'

'Oh.'

'Yeah.'

The drive is silent, but I use the time to think about what to do about Lola's situation. I decide against calling Madison, and plan a scheme.

If there's one thing I plan on doing this winter, it's helping my friends. They became my friends and put me out of my misery, and now I have to show them that I'm worth it.

At least, I think I am.

At the gates of Lola's mansion, we meet her elder brother.

He's in a sleek blue car with a phone pressed to his ear. When Alaric walks out to him, he says something and ends the call, getting out of the car that's blocking the gates.

They shake hands, and I get the feeling that they may know each other. They do celebrate business soirees together, after all.

Lola's brother takes Lola in his arms and I put her phone in his front pocket. He says 'Thanks for that,' and the way his eyes shine tells me there's more to his words. He truly cares about his sister.
