The Way He Left Me《Byler》

16th Birthday

    ( If you're wondering why Will and Mike aren't in school when it's set in October It's because this is an AU and their story flows better if school isn't in the picture. Also, I will be putting in a separate chapter just for the playlist. )

    I opened my eyes and quickly closed them again as the light from outside my window blinded me.  My alarm was still going off but I couldn't care less, It was my birthday and all I felt like doing was crying. It was because of him. 

    Yesterday when I was checking the mail I saw two people pressed up against our pool shed kissing, I was about to yell until I saw who it was.  It was Mike kissing someone, at first I wasn't sure who. I felt a pang of jealousy, wishing that it was me he was kissing. I stood there watching them, I couldn't look away even if I wanted to. Then I noticed something- I noticed who he was kissing, Mike was kissing a boy. Overwhelmed with sadness I tore my eyes away from them, walking into my bedroom I slammed the door behind me. A broken sob escaped my lips as I slid down the wall, am I not good enough for him?  

    I sat in bed staring blankly at my wall, I felt weird.  My mom called me down for breakfast but I just sat there. All of a sudden my door opened and Mike was standing there, his hair as wild as the day we met.

    " Happy 16th Birthday!" Mike said in a singsong voice.  I forced myself to smile. "Today after the party, I have a surprise for you," Mike told me before winking and walking away. The fuck. A surprise? I thought to myself before shaking my head and crawling back under my covers and falling asleep.

    I awoke from my dream dazed and confused. I checked my phone only to see that it was 3 pm, an hour before the party started. I got dressed quickly but couldn't stop thinking about my dream, how Mike's lips brushed against my c- I was interrupted by Mike barging in.

" You okay?" He asked, noticing my pale face. " Y-yeah, just nervous I guess. " I said trying to sound nonchalant but Instead, I sounded as If I was asking a question.  " Well, Birthday Boy your friends are here" 

    " Birthday Boy?" I giggled, forgetting about yesterday.  Mike raised his eyebrows and laughed " You don't like it?" He had a shit-eating grin on his face that all I wanted to do was smack off- well no, I'd rather kiss it off. 

    " I love it" I replied without a hint of sarcasm.

Downstairs

    As I stepped off the final step the lights flicked on and I was swarmed by my friends, family, and Mike screaming happy birthday. I decided that I was going to make the best out of today and forget about yesterday. Mike can kiss anyone he wants to and it won't bother me, Right? Well, that's what I told myself at least. 

    We all took a seat at the table, Max was about to sit beside me that was until Mike sat down right before her. She frowned and gave him a " What the Hell" look before taking the seat in front of me. " May I propose a toast to Wiliam?" Mike asked in a posh British accent. My mom decided to join in " Why yes Mike that would be lovely!" I laughed as everyone began agreeing and failing at the accent, except for El she was surprisingly good. 

    " William," He began " I would like to say that even though I may have only known you for a week, It is very clear that you are an amazing person and I hope to become good chums with you over the next 7 weeks." Mike paused. Everyone clapped thinking he was done until he cleared his throat and quickly said: " I forgot to mention that your eyes look as if they have specks of gold in them." He winked dramatically. Everyone began laughing assuming it was an inside joke. I felt my face heat up, El looked at me smirking and discreetly puckered her lips making a kissing motion referring to me and Mike.  I tried to look confused like I had no idea where she got such a notion.  

    If I had any Idea that Mike had planned that last part and it wasn't an afterthought I would have done something a lot sooner but, of course, I didn't because It was Mike Wheeler the same Mike Wheeler that would ignore me for days on end leaving me to think the worst. 

    After his speech, we cut the cake and had dinner. I felt Mike's eyes on me the whole time, I ignored it. I was too afraid to stare back so instead, I spilled my drink on him. Yes, you read that right,  I looked back and forth between him and my cup full of sweet tea before " accidentally" knocking it into his lap. " I'm so sorry, I'll go get a towel" I apologized while acting embarrassed. I went into my bathroom upstairs to get a towel but when I got there I burst out laughing. 

    Back at the table, Mike excused himself saying he was going to go put dry clothes on. " Will?" he called out wondering what was taking so long. " In here!" I responded with fake embarrassment.  I opened the door and went to find Mike but apparently he had the same idea. He was on the other side about to grab the doorknob, not paying attention I walked right into him and stumbled almost falling but he caught me,  with his hands around my waist he raised me back up. I was actually embarrassed now and his hands weren't helping.  He kept them there as we stared at each other 

    Max turned the corner on her way to use the bathroom and saw us standing there. " Oh uh sorry for.. interrupting?" she spat out quickly. Now we were both blushing, his hands fell back to his sides, he scratched his neck not knowing what to say. I was in awe, he finally didn't have anything to say, not a single word. "We're screwed" I mumbled to him. A minute went by in complete silence.  " Well, I'm going to use the bathroom now," Max said breaking the silence, she then walked past us and into the bathroom. 

    Mike and I still stood there still in shock. " Privacy please?" She scoffed. That caught our attention and we both quickly went our separate ways.
