New year's and You

It's the next morning, I look behind me, and Andrew is sleeping as peaceful as a newborn baby. I start to sit up slowly so I don't make a sound to wake him but his hand is laying on my hip holding me back from going anywhere. I blush and remove his hand slowly.

I go to the kitchen; my mom is there.

"Good morning Mommy," I whisper into her ear and kiss her on her cheek as she is leaning at the counter next to the coffee machine waiting for her coffee.

"Good morning dear." She says with a 'pretending to be happy but I'm really not' smile.

"What's up? Are you okay?" I say.

"Your dad?" She starts.

"What about him?" I say with a worried tone in my voice.

"He isn't coming home before you go back to New Jersey," she lets out with a voice crack.

"I could come back and visit again when I get my spring break," I say happily.

"No, he isn't coming home," she says as a tear comes down her face.

"What do you mean? Did something happen? Is he okay," I say with a frightened look on my face.

"He wants to divorce me," she blurts.

"What! Why?"

"He found someone new," she scoffs sadly.

"How could he do this to you? How could he leave us?" I yell.

"Honey, he chose Katherine over us, we have to get used to it."

"So that's her name? Katherine? That's the chick he left you for?!" I yell as I walk to the living room and grab the cordless landline telephone phone that's sitting on the side table next to the couch.

"Emma, what are you doing? Don't call him," my mom says as she holds my shoulder. I dial his number that I have memorized since I was in high school. Yes, he never changed it since then. I press the green call button. After a couple of rings, he picks up.

"Hello?" He starts as I heat up with anger. "Teresa, is that you?"

"No, it's me, your daughter, the one you left to be with that so-called Katherine of yours," I say holding my anger back for a few seconds. "Did you think that I wouldn't have found out? You thought mom could hold it? But she got tired of being broken on the inside so she burst from holding on for too long!"

"Emma... I—" His cranky deep voice barely says.

I stop him, "How could you? I get it, you have fallen out of love with Mom right? But you could have at least showed up to be with me for the holidays instead of shipping my gift." I yell into the phone. "How can you even send me a picture of us as a happy family when behind the scenes it's all just a small family living worlds away!"

"Emma please..."

"Don't call me daughter and I won't call you father because we never want to see you again! Goodbye Stranger!" I hang up. I fall on the couch beside me and throw the phone next to me. My mom sits beside me.

"Are you okay?" My mom asks.

"No mom, that question goes for you. Are you okay?" I say as I gently rub her shoulder.

"I'm okay even after acting nonchalant," she says.

I puff, "Who does he think he is? How dare he do that to you!"

"Forget it, Emma, I have been with him for these long years and he used me and threw me out like a crumbled piece of paper."

"He's not worth it, Mom," I say as I stand up. "I'll make breakfast and you just rest here."
