I stared at a page in a book. I didn't read any of the words. I just sat in the rubbery chair and stared. I saw movement outside from the corner of my eye. Brown hair, red flannel. I turned my head and looked out. She was spinning around in circles, laughing, giggling. I smiled. She was filled with so much energy, contrasting my own.
I got out of the chair, and looked in the mirror. Black hair. Green eyes. An ugly scar.
I was reminded... of one of the reasons why I didn't want to go outside.
I didn't fit in.
Then again, who fits in, in a place like this?
I looked over to the window; walking towards it, I saw the reason why I wanted to go outside in the first place.
I walked out of my room, and asked one of the orderlies if I could go outside. She seemed shocked. I never would voluntarily go out, so this came as a surprise. She nodded and led me out, and she hurried back inside.
I could see her, she was sitting now, back in the place we first met. She was sitting in the exact same spot as before. Talking to Allen. I made my way over to her, a little nervous in my approach. I awkwardly stood in front of her, shuffling my feet.
"Hi." Was all I managed to say. I mentally smacked myself.
"Hey there stranger, oh, Allen says hi too." She said, energetic and beaming. I nodded, saying "Hi." Again, this time to her friend that I couldn't see. I kept standing, not knowing what to do with myself. She looked up at me and giggled.
"Haha, well, are you going to just stand there all day or sit down for a bit?" She said, patting the grass next to her. Exactly where I sat last time.
I sat down and listened as she talked on. I like the sound of her voice. Light, sweet, soothing. I realized that I didn't even know her age. She looked pretty young. For some reason, that got me worrying. Worrying that she was too young. I felt a little sick. Should I ask? Would that be too weird? I decided to ask.
"Hey, how old are you?"
I interrupted her right when she was complaining about the movie Dragonball Evolution.
"Oh, well, I'm seventeen." She said, smiling. 'Shit.' I inwardly cursed. 'I think she is younger than me. How old did those papers say I was?' I didn't know what to do now. I stared up at the sky, another inward turmoil taking place. Her voice found it's way into my ears,
"What about you?"
I snapped back to reality.
"What?" I asked, a little lost.
"How old are you?" She asked, smiling up at me.
"Oh, um... I'm twenty." I said. I felt like I was a creeper, she was so much younger than me. I felt as if being around her was wrong. Like it wasn't right. But... I couldn't deny that... she made me feel... alive.
She smiled, she looked a little sad.
Before I could ask her what's wrong, an orderly and my shrink came walking through the doors, and heading for us. My shrink looked from Sarah to me, and smiled.
"Mr. Evans, please, come with me." He said.
I felt like groaning, I didn't want to leave her. I watched as the orderly walked off with Sarah, my eye's filled with longing.
My shrink looked at me through his glasses, I knew that he was studying the way I was acting right now. He turned and told me to follow.
