WHEN THE MAZE DOORS RUMBLED OPEN THAT DAY Atlas couldn't help but feel like there was something wrong. there was something just skittering underneath his skin, and he felt this strange tingle constantly.

he wanted to voice his concerns to Minho, however he knew he would just get called a dumb shank

even as they descended into the maze that day, he couldn't shake off that sinister feeling.

it made him kind of scared, anxious for what to come, and at the same time, giddy with excitement.

he spent everyday the same. agonizingly, painstakingly slow day that went by.

he woke up, ran with minho, found absolutely nothing and came back to the glade.

except for today.

because today was different.

because today they were expecting a new greenie, but this time, something lurked underneath his skin. thrumming with energy, anxiety, excitement.

when Minho and Atlas came back from the maze, the new greenie had already arrived.

he looked pretty plain, like the other boys, but with a dangerous spark of curiosity in the mirth of his dark brown eyes.

but the one thing that shocked him the most, was that he knew his name before the other boy said it.

it took him a minute of looking at him before something clicked in his mind a name was brought to the front.

thomas.

he didn't know why this new boy had such an impact on his memory, but it did. it's like the time he saw Newt for the first time.

speaking of..

he hasn't talked to him much since the incident, and it made his heart hurt he just left him like that.

Atlas set off to find the blonde boy.

^^

he found him lurking around the deadheads, kind of gazing off into the distance.

"Newt?" he said, approaching him. Newt looked at him distatsefulky.

"I see you've finally come to talk." he said, kicking around rocks.

"I know—i'm sorry, it's just this whole runner thing is a lot of responsibility and—"

"right, right. your super important runner job, i get it." Newt said, clicking his jaw into place.

oh..oh.

"are you..jealous?"

newts eyes snapped to his.

"i am not!"

"oh you totally are." Atlas said, before newt scoffed and looked away.

"okay, maybe a little bit." he said in a small voice. Atlas walked closer to him, and tugged him down to sit with him.

"it's okay, i get it." he said, laying his head on newts shoulder.

"i kinda missed you, Atlas."

and despite the lack of communication with him lately, Atlas felt incredibly safe with Newt. it left a burning sensation in his chest, and it scared him.

"i missed you too."
