IN THE LONG RUN (BOOK 2 OF BAR BLUES!)

Chapter 3: Congratulations...

I gently pull the wooden chair out from the table cringing as it scrapes along the floor boards. My eyes quickly dart over to Joe to see if he has noticed but his eyes are scanning the grand amount of food spread across the whole table only leaving room for the plates.

Suddenly I feel a soft hand to touch my skin it was freezing like ice had just been thrown over me. I flinched, the moment I did regretting it. Layla's eyes drift towards me with sadness filling them I smile reassuringly but that doesn't do much.

Once I am finally on the seat I grab the first thing in my eye line. The chicken. As I go to pull a piece out to put on my plate it flies across the room hitting Layla's Dad straight in the face. Oh no how could I do that? All I had to do was pull a bit of chicken out the bowl and put it onto my plate! How could things go so quickly wrong?

'Oh my gosh I am so sorry!' I reply frustrated at my lack of grace.

'It's okay just don't hit me with a bone' Joe laughs trying to not cause an argument.

'Haha Bobby you clumsy elephant! That was hilarious!' George replies in between screaming chuckles.

I turn to Layla for support but she is just as amused.

'That was brilliant Bobby!' Louise cackles in hysteria.

I move my body once again as if laughing but I feel all my skin cells clench in terror. I just hit Layla's Dad with chicken. The scariest man alive in the head with chicken. I don't know how I am not dead right now.

Moments later as I have finally gotten all my food without hitting anyone again I hear a bang. Not too loud that anyone next to me could hear but enough that I turn my head to George and Louise.

They are sat there both mouthing words to me.

'What?' I whisper.

'Do it now!' They whisper back in unison.

'What I can't it's not very romantic I was gonna wait till dessert' I reply.

'Bobby mate, seriously look at her'

I turn and look at Layla as requested and she is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. The way her body looks so graceful and peaceful just eating a peace of chicken. His right it's time. I slowly push the chair trying to be discreet as I get down on one knee and make a slight coughing noise.

Her head turns slowly to see what is happening, when her whole body lights up at the sight of the ring and me on one knee in front of her.

'Will you marry me?'

Tears begin to prick at her eye lids as i wait in fear of her saying no.

'Is this why you were nervous for dinner tonight and threw a piece of chicken at my dad' she questions laughing a little through tears.I nod.

'So will you marry me?'

She jumps up in joy nearly knocking everything off the table.

'Of course I will you silly man!' She grabs me and kisses me fiercely.

I pull away to put the ring on her finger.

'You one legged wonder!' She laughs.

'Haha told you Bobby, she would say yes!' Louise laughs, her face as well pink with joyful tears.

'You knew?' Layla asks.

'Yep! Knew for a while now and your dad! Bobby came and asked asked us a couple weeks back!' She replies as Layla turns to look at her Dad happy as day smiling gleefully at her.

'Don't forget me! I knew for a couple months now!' George buts in.

Layla rushes to her father pulling him for a hug and a kiss on the cheek when I see her whisper something into his ear.

'Whatever makes you happy my beautiful girl!'

She must have asked him why he gave me his blessing.

'Aww Daddy' she replies pulling him back in for another hug.

'Ahh don't forget me' Louise yells rapping her arms round them both.

'Congratulations Bobby boy!' George tells as he slaps his arm round my neck. 'But don't hurt if you do I'll have to kill yah! Even if we are friends!'

'I would never!'

My heart is soaring she said yes! She actually said yes.
