Brook's POV
I watched as Harper ran away, and shortly after, lost sight of him.
I meant what I said to him, I was really worried about him. Just as he'd stopped visiting, was when I realized I'd started to feel something for him.
I'd only known him for a week, but he listened.
He listened when I talked and seemed really interested in what I said, hanging onto my every word with bright eyes and he would wait about an hour for me everyday just to see me when I got off from work, and he could never stay for long rushing off after thirty minutes or so. I'd never had a boy do that for me before.
I turned back to the shop, I'd left it unattended, running to meet Harper as soon as I'd seen him. He looked as if he was on a mission I wanted to make sure I caught him.
As soon as I entered and turned the sign back to 'Open' the shop was flooded. People desperate to buy something before the end of their lunch break. As I catered to the first few customers I saw Mikey, the guy who usually took the shift after mine walk in, he gave me a quick nod and then moved to the back to get changed. A grin broke out on my face as I helped the next customer, since Mikey was there it meant that I could leave as soon as he started working.
When he next emerged he was clad in his shop uniform, a signal that meant I could finally leave the counter. I loved my job, but it was tiring, my legs hurt from standing and I was constantly getting burnt by the hot milk (I'd never learnt the proper technique).
Walking into the back and putting on my headphones, I slowly took of my clothes, anxious to go to bed before waking up for my other job at the bar later.
I was folding my clothes and putting them in my locker, when I heard the faint sound of a door open through my music behind me. Without turning I spoke 'Mikey, go work, you know you can't be back here during your shift.' But when the person behind me didn't speak, I looked over my shoulder to see a tall guy about my age looming over me.
'Um sir,' I said ' you can't be back here.' I wondered how he made it past Mikey in the first place.
The man, in turn said nothing. He just looked at me as if he was confused. He began to walk towards me, and I started to feel nervous, this guy was so much taller than me, and he looked like he worked out, if it came down to it he would destroy me. I mean, I worked out, but still.
'Why you?' The man said suddenly.
I had no idea what he was talking about and he must have sensed my confusion because he continued.
'Why would he pick you?'
I still had no idea, what on earth he was talking about but he didn't elaborate this time.
'Listen bro-' I began, but I was cut off by the strange boy.
'I'm going to have to take you now Brooklyn.' That startled me, the fact that he knew my name and said he was going to 'take me' leaving me with even more questions, and honestly, fear.
But when he saw my face change after his last comment, he back tracked, nose crinkling in disgust.
'Ew, no not like that.' He said, I would've felt quite offended if he hadn't of them produced a gun and 'escorted' me out of the staff room.
I was just lucky that, this had happened when I was still changing. It's one thing to walk out of a room with a gun to your head, it's a whole other thing to walk out of a room with a gun to you head and naked, of course I'd chosen that day to go commando.
I shocked myself with how calm I was being, I'd expected myself to collapse or start crying, but instead I just calmly walked in front of him with the cool metal pressed to the nape of my neck.
But I had the feeling it was the calm before the storm, and I was proven right when I walked into the main room. A gasp left my lips, and my legs began to give out when I saw it.
The man held me up as I viewed the room, it was as if it were a scene from a horror movie, there was blood smeared across the walls and customers lay on the ground. They were all dead. My mind went numb as the thought hit me.
Mikey.
I turned and saw him laying on the floor behind the counter, blood pouring out of his chest, gasping for air. I wanted to run to him, but the person behind me had my arm in a bruising grip, warning me not to move.
Mikey's eyes looked to me as his chest pumped rapidly, desperately trying to breath, before he began to cough and blood poured out of his mouth. A tear finally tracked down my cheek as I saw his breaths slow and his eyes fade. He watched me the whole time.
I hadn't known him very well, he was always just the guy who took the shift after me, but watching him die was heart wrenching.
'Move.' The noise came from the man behind me, as he pushed me forward and out of the shop into a black Mercedes with tinted windows.
As we drove away to an unknown destination, I mourned the loss of my customers and the co worker I barely knew.
Wondering why on earth these men had chosen me.
