Harper's POV
Knocking on my father's door in that moment was probably the second most nerve wracking feeling I'd ever experienced. Not only had I failed my second mission in a row, to kill Sonny Robertson, but now I had to warn him of coming danger from that same target.
I was about to pee my pants.
Not many things made me feel that way, not even during my torture had I been so terrified. However, after all this time, I felt as if my father still held power over me.
I stood outside the door, preparing myself for whatever would come next, ready to hear a deep voice call for me to enter, but instead, I heard footsteps approach the door instead, and as the large mahogany door opened I had to look up to see his face.
He held the same familiar smirk, and his eyes still kept their sadistic glint. He hadn't changed. Although I don't know why I expected him to, I'd only been gone for about a week.
'So you decided to come home son, that's good.' He spoke.
Even though I knew that there wouldn't be a fuss about my 'disappearance' I still thought that people would wonder where I went.
I was about to speak, when father made comment that made my blood run cold.
'How's your back?'
My head snapped towards him, I wasn't stupid, I knew that father usually had me followed, but he couldn't have known about my back unless he'd had someone watching me at Sonny's place. Meaning he knew where I was the entire time, and he knew what was happening to me, but he did nothing.
This was a new low, especially for a man who claimed to put family first.
I stood there shocked, but father never offered up any new information, but I couldn't let him distract me, not when a curly haired criminal was on a war path to come and get me and kill the entire family.
'Father,' I said taking a deep breath, 'the boy you sent me to kill, I assume you know he took me.'
My father didn't even nod, he just stood there waiting for me to go on.
'He's coming here, he wants to take me back and get back at everyone for what we did to his family.'
Father stared at me, his face shifting, before bursting out in laughter. He continued to laugh and laugh and laugh.
When he'd finally finished tears had accumulated in his eyes that he had to wipe away.
'Go to your room boy, I've had enough of you for today.'
'Father, I'm not joking, please, listen, he'll be here by nightfall.'
'You know what,' he replied 'I'm going to let you have 10 men, but when the Matsa boy doesn't turn up you'll have to answer to me, I hope you understand that.'
I gulped, father's punishments were always eventful, but I knew that Sonny was coming, and 10 people was not enough.
Father made a gesture for me to leave and turned away, clearly dismissing me.
'I need more,' I'd planted my feet firmly to the ground, holding my stance, ready for a fight, '10 soldiers is not enough.'
He turned around then, a look of shock on his face before it changed into one of anger. I quickly looked to my left where he'd thrown the blade at me a week before, of course he'd gotten the wall repaired, no evidence of his abuse.
As I looked back, I saw father grab a blade just sitting on his desk, running his thumb over the blade, watching the blood trickle out of it. He suddenly looked back up at me, ' I could kill you, I don't want to of course, you're family, but I could.'
He walked towards me holding the knife to my neck, 'I could accidentally,' he pushed into my skin ' slip' the blood began to run, 'no one would miss you, you don't belong here anyway.'
I wanted to gasp when he ran a thin line down my neck, a slice I knew would scar, I'd been getting a lot of scars recently.
'You're mother was the same when I held my knife to her neck you know, she didn't make a sound.' He then lifted the weapon off of me, wiping it on a piece of cloth he held.
'The only difference was she wasn't family.'
I turned to walk away, knowing it was difficult to reason with a mad man.
'100 men James,' I didn't turn, I just nodded, walking towards the door and as I went to close it behind me I heard him murmur 'it'll make the punishment all the more sweet.'
As son as the door was closed I lifted up my jumper, using it to wipe the blood off of my neck, although most of It had already dried, as I did so I noticed the black leather underneath it, reminding me of the mission ahead.
Stalking back down the stairs I shed my layers of 'normal' clothing.
But while walking past the front door, the doorbell suddenly rang, leaving a dark feeling in my stomach.
I moved to open it but Rye had been walking down the opposite stairs, and so made it to the front door before me, nodding as he passed me, which I found strange, I thought he hated me.
I made my way to the door anyway, Rye blocking my view of the visitor, but I could tell from the way he stood with his fists clenched and his back tensed, it wasn't someone welcome.
And as I finally saw who it was made my hair stand on end, because there, in front of Rye stood none other than Sonny Robertson.
'Hey babe, you left in a hurry this morning.'
