Harper's POV

Father had walked in to an ugly situation, the kind of scene that would make normal people wretch, with a smile on his face.

A cold, horrible smile, one that could gift nightmares.

He surveyed the scene, eyes sweeping over my brother clutching the blonde to him. The word blonde now referring to his former hair color as all traces of it were now gone. Replaced with ugly red as Rye repeatedly combed his bloody fingers through the dead boy's hair.

Loud wails filled the otherwise silent room as my distraught brother mourned his loss, and all the while my father watched him with disgust.

Father must have thought him weak. Weak for loving, weak for continuing to love. It baffled me, he claimed to love my stepmother and yet was still horrified when either of his children did anything that could make them vulnerable. He was a complex man. I didn't think I could ever understand him.

After some time Rye's harsh cries became weak sobs, and I hadn't even noticed my father's gaze has moved to me.

'You would never embarrass me like that,' he said nodding towards the bloody mess on the floor, ' would you James?'

He looked quizzical, curious, as if he really wanted to know the answer to the question.

I looked away from his poisoned glare, eyes trained on the floor in front of me.

'No father.' I said clenching my jaw.

'Good, now, let me address the elephant in the room.' I had no idea what elephant he was talking about, but as always, I knew better then to ask.

'Sonny,' he started, making me look up in shock, I'd completely forgotten that boy existed, but when i looked to the side his existence was proved. He stood with a familiar smirk. It was only then that I realized, Sonny and my father were so much alike anyone would mistake them to be father and son.

Both having dark hair and dark eyes, both being tall, and both holding the same smug smirk. In fact they were so scarily similar that a shiver danced down my spine. I looked back and forth between them, it was as if I was looking through a mirror into the past. I don't know how I'd never noticed before, but it explained why I'd always felt so uneasy around the curly haired boy.

'Sonny,' my father carried on, not knowing about the eerie thoughts that now banged at my skull.

'my dear boy, what are you doing here? I wasn't expecting you for another week.'

My brain was starting to hurt, what on earth was going on?

I was just about able to hear Sonny's reply.
'My Harper ran away, I've come to collect him and I thought I'd perhaps get the money I'm owed.'

'Of course.'

My head snapped up when Sonny had referred to me as his Harper, and I couldn't help but let the confusion seep into my features.

I was usually excellent at hiding my true feelings but in this case I imagined I looked comical: eyes bulging out of my head, nose scrunched and mouth contorted.

Father began to walk away once again, turning on his heel and walking towards the large door he'd emerged from, before turning back to us and signaling with his head he wanted us to follow.

I slowly rose, unable to mask my further confusion and shock. By the time I went to take my fist step forward father had disappeared in the direction of his office, making my way towards the door I felt a large hand lay on my shoulder.

I slowly turned, having had enough surprises for the day.

'You need to get out, now.'

The smirk was gone, there was no trace of smugness and his trademark taunting smirk had vanished.

He was planning something, it didn't make sense for him to just randomly show up at my house, especially without backup.

What didn't make sense was, he was trying to warn me.

Why would he do that?

I understood he had a weird fascination with me, but it still made no sense.

The other question was, what was he planning?

I had thought that he'd turn up with dozens of men, launch an attack on my family, and then try to take me back to his home to be tortured. However he'd done the opposite.

And if he did decide to launch an attack with all his men, from wherever they may have been hidden.

We would probably struggle to fight back, I hadn't had a chance to tell my soldiers yet.

I didn't know much, but I did know that something was going to happen.

Sorry it's so late, but this chapter has been really hard to write, I haven't even read through it yet so I might take it down and edit it later but um I hope you enjoyed it anyway.
