As hard as my father had tried, he couldn't get me out of detention. He did manage to get me out of Mr. William's class, which at that point was good enough for me.
I finished my ice coffee and tossed the plastic cup into the recycling bin on my way to class.
Mr. Davis looked at me and shook his head when I got closer to the door.
"Oh come on, what did I do now?" I whined.
"We'll talk in a moment, come inside before the bell rings."
"Since a lot of you haven't finished last day's assignment, I'll give you this class to finish it. The people that are done can just have free time, I suggest doing homework, but I know most of you will do something else, so do what you please." Mr. Davis said after waiting a few minutes for the latecomers. "Natalia, I'd like to see you in the hallway, please."
I sighed and followed him out to the hallway. "All right just hit me with it, what did I do now?"
"I'd like to speak to you about the apology letter you gave me to give to Mr. Williams, I think you know why."
"I know it isn't completely done, but I still have two weeks, and you said I didn't have to finish it all yesterday."
"No. You see, the problem wasn't it being incomplete, the problem was what you wrote." He corrected.
"Whatever do you mean?"
He huffed and opened up a folded piece of paper. "Well you see, instead of an apology letter, you wrote an acronym." He told me with that voice you use when you're trying to sound calm when you're really not.
I folded my arms over my chest
"Doesn't ring a bell. You must have the wrong paper."He narrowed his eyes at me and took a deep breath. "Let me read it to you. So basically you said that w stands for 'washed-out', I stands for 'ignorant', L stands for loser, the other L stands for 'lame', the other I stands for 'idiot', the A stands for 'abomination'? the M stands for 'meaningless' and the S stands for 'shameful. Does it ring a bell now?"
I looked down because I was trying not to laugh and I knew if I looked at him any longer I'd lose it and that would really piss him off.
"Natalia I almost showed this to him. Luckily he didn't have his reading glasses on yet and I had time to pull it away and say it was the wrong paper. I could have gotten in trouble, and you would have been in even more trouble."
"Okay but tell me he didn't deserve it."
"Natalia-"
"Mr. Davis?"
"Okay fine, he may have deserved it but unfortunately, you can't do this. I don't like seeing any of my students, and you especially, get in trouble. Please, try and keep these things at home?"
He basically told me I was right so I didn't see a reason to give him a hard time. "All right, I'm sorry, I was just mad and it made me feel better."
"Writing things like that is fine in my opinion, but you can't give it to me and pretend it's your apology letter."
"Okay, okay."
"I'm going to be mean and say although you completed last day's assignment you don't get free time. You have to work on your apology letter because I have a feeling it's going to take some time. I don't think you should have to write it, but it isn't up to me." He said and gave my shoulder a gentle squeeze.
I don't know if the situation was actually upsetting me that much or if it was my period, but my eyes began tearing up and I cannot begin to explain to you how much that embarrassed me.
He looked around to see if any one was there, and then kissed me on the forehead. "I'm sorry you're going through this, keep your head up. Take a minute or two if you need it." He said before walking back into class.
I'm not 'gonna lie; that kiss made me feel a little better.
I don't know how it happened, he had looked around, but I guess Mariana had come around the corner just as he kissed me because when I looked up, she was staring at me wide-eyed.
She stomped over to me, grabbed my wrist, and basically dragged me to the washroom.
She kicked the door stopper out of the way so it would close and lock behind us. "What was that?"
I gulped. "What was what?"
"Natalia don't play stupid."
I shrugged and began fiddling with my necklace. "Mariana, I have no idea what you're talking about."
She clenched her jaw, she looked like she wanted to kill me. "Okay I'll tell you then! I just watched Mr. Davis, our English teacher, kiss you on the head!"
"He just leaned closer to me, he didn't kiss me." I lied.
"Natalia, don't fucking lie to me, I know what I saw."
I didn't say anything, my heart was racing and I couldn't look her in the eyes.
She scoffed. "Do you know how much trouble you could get in?!"
Yes.
"Natalia would you speak?!" She snapped.
I sighed and squeezed my eyes shut. "Okay, okay. He did kiss me, I'm sorry for lying."
"Are you two boyfriend and girlfriend?! Is this why you're always in detention?! How long as this been going on?!"
"Okay one question at a time please. No, we are not boyfriend and girlfriend, we just kissed yesterday, that's is all."
She raised a dark eyebrow at me.
"I'm serious! And no, that isn't why I'm always in detention. I'm in detention because of this stupid school." I defended with an eyeroll.
"This is... this is..." She began pacing the bathroom, and finally leaned against the wall across from me. "This is insane."
I put my face in my hands. "I know... I don't know what happened. Detention made us close but I didn't think this would happen."
All of a sudden she smiled. "Well I mean, I guess he isn't that much older than you. "You know, this is actually kind of hot... good for you!" She said. "So do you really like him or is this just for fun?"
"I don't know what 'this' is yet, but yes I do 'kinda sorta really like him." I admitted. "But you can't tell anyone!"
"I won't."
I was still scared because if people found about that things would've bad, and my dad probably would've killed him. "Promise?"
"Of course, Nat.
