I look at the clock and count the seconds, ten... nine... eight... seven
"Mia?" What do you want?"Yes Mr.Bernard?" I look away from the mesmerizing hands of the clock, and bring my gaze to Mr.Bernard.
"What makes you think that this class is going to go by quicker by staring at a clock?"
And suddenly the bell rings and everyone gets up in unison. I look in Mr. Bernard's direction and wink. Then follow closely behind the crowd of hungry teenagers.
It's amazing what hunger can do to teenagers.
After being pushed around by many people, the crowd spreads out when we get to the large cafeteria.
From behind, I feel arms grasp my shoulders. I turn around to see that it's Alex."Hey." I say smiling.
"Hey." he smiles back. "So did you have History yet?"
"Nah. I have it next." I frown.
"Oh well good luck, he's in a pissy mood."
"Oh great, what did you guys do to him?"
"Me? I did nothing" he laughs, and looks up, remembering what happened in that class. For a moment I pick up my phone and glance at it to check something on social media. In the corner of my eye I see him glancing at me, as if he's trying to see what my thoughts are.We then walk to our table in silence, clearly we're both thinking about something. while the crowd starts to dissipate. I put my bag in my designated seat, grab my wallet, and we make our way to the long lunch line.
"So..." he looks at me as I look straight ahead, trying to avoid his gaze.
"What are you getting?" He asks looking towards the floor to avoid looking at me.
"You know, the usual."
"Oh. a chicken sandwich with lettuce tomato and mustard?" I nod slowly how does he know? He gets a slice of pizza and fries, typical. We then just look towards the food, awkwardly remaining silent.
After getting our lunch, we walk towards our table and I notice that Jay is there, Sasha sitting on the opposite side of him.
Jay looks towards me then looks away like I was non existent.
I sit in between Ky and Alexis, Alexis sits next to Sasha.
I stay quiet, knowing that Sasha is watching me carefully the entire time. I feel like saying who the fuck are you looking, but I don't.
I unwrap the plastic for my sandwich and slowly eat it, as Alex and Jay argue about football it's nothing new, but normally it's comforting. Today it feels different, toxic. I am suddenly sick of this same old routine for lunch, so I get up to go to the bathroom, I take my bag with me without saying a word, I didn't notice that he followed me. When I came out of the bathroom He approached me and I look away not knowing what to say to him, if I should ignore him, say something.
I open my mouth, then close it again, I realize that I don't really have anything to say He breaks the silence ."Mia?" He softly says. I avoid his gaze, he looks straight into my eyes. "You know, I hate not talking to you."
I turn sideways and cross my arms. Maybe I should just walk away.
"The silent treatment huh."
"why would you do something like that?!" I blurt out.
"Well... I"
"And then expect me to be okay about it." I interrupt.
"Mia I don't expect you to be okay about it. I really wanted to, but I have a girlfriend."
" Well maybe you should have thought about that before making me that girl" I start to walk away. I expect him to reach for me and kiss me, at least that's what I wanted him to do, but he just lets me walk away. I felt a piece of my heart break away which each step that he lets me take. I walk to return to sitting next to Ky wiping the tears below my eyes first then pretend like nothing happened because I was wishing that something had happened, which was unsettling.
