Run. That's all he knew how to do. Run. He ran during the war, charging up hills and running to fortresses with his general by his side. Now, though, he was alone. Alone, and terrified. He ran through shadowy woods. Suddenly, Ahsoka was there. She had a hopeful fire in her eyes.
"We're almost out! Rex, we're going home!" She celebrated. She was ahead of him, and the shadows lightened into a foggy mist with every step. She was so much faster than him, and began to out distance him. "Come on, Rex!" She laughed. Rex heard a familiar whine, and tried to shout a warning to Ahsoka. The words stuck in his throat. "Rex? What's -" She was cut off, a shot from a trandoshan hovercar tearing through her chest. Rex closed the gap, the hovercar disappearing. He caught her as she started to fall. "Rex..." She whispered, her strength failing.
"It's ok, Ahsoka. You're gonna be Ok. You're gonna..." He trailed off, unable to continue as the tears ran down his face. They didn't cloud his eyes, though. He could see every detail of her small, broken body. With an effort, she reached up and wiped the tears off his cheek with a delicate hand.
"Rex... you need to go, you need to leave me, and get out of here." She whispered, her breaths rattling. Rex shook his head.
"No I can't... I won't." He sobbed. She gave him a sad smile. With the last of her strength, she pulled herself up, pressing her cold lips against his. The light in her eyes dimmed, winking out entirely as her form faded, her body ceasing to exist.
With a jolt, he sat upright, breathing hard. He was in the tree cave with the younglings. It was still dark out. Ahsoka stirred next to him. He was shaking, but it was a small comfort to know she was alive.
"Rexie, wha's wrong?" She mumbled, sitting up. Her togruta vision let her see the tears on his face in the dim light.
"Nothing, Cyare. Go back to sleep." He whispered. She shook her head, and leaned against him.
"No, something's wrong. Was it Kalifa?" She said, keeping her voice low. He shook his head, a vain attempt to clear it.
"No it... it was you." He breathed, cold sweat breaking out over his body.
"Oh, Rex." She murmured, rubbing his back. "I'm ok. We're ok. We'll get out of this... Together." She continued trying to sooth him, and he eventually calmed down.
"I'm sorry, Ahsoka. I didn't mean to wake you." He apologised.
"It's ok Rex. Everyone has bad dreams. Even the great captain of Torrent company." She whispered. "Speaking of getting out, I have an idea." Rex shot her a look. "What time is it?" she asked, peering out of the alcove at the dark sky.
"Early enough that the sun won't rise for a few hours. Why are we awake again?" Jinx cut in from across the cave. O-Mer was up too.
"Sorry, did we wake you?" Ahsoka asked sheepishly.
"You weren't very quiet." He deadpanned. "We decided to let you two have your moment." Both Rex and Ahsoka blushed.
"Well, if we're all up, why don't we discuss strategy." O-Mer said, sitting up. "What's your plan Ahsoka?"
"Well, ah. It's not a plan, more of an idea." She stuttered.
"So... it's a Skywalker plan." Rex interjected, and he and Ahsoka shared a laugh. Jinx and O-Mer looked confused.
"Sorry, My master is the general of the 501st division in the clone wars. He has a tendency to..." She trailed off.
"Throw caution into the wind and yell 'kriff the consequences, I do what I want and hope for the best'?" Rex joked.
"Not how I would phrase it, but that pretty accurate." Ahsoka hedged. Jinx and O-Mer joined in the good humored chuckles at Anakin's expense.
"I was thinking about the prisoner transport. One thing they definitely won't expect would be for us to take it head on. If we can bring the ship down, we can find something in the wreck that might be useful. Like a transmitter. We could also free the prisoners, and add to our numbers." Ahsoka said.
"Yep, that sounds like a Skywalker plan. Let's do it and see what happens." Rex grinned. Ahsoka threw her head back and laughed.
"No, it sounds like a Kenobi plan that Skywalker took over." She crowed. Jinx and O-Mer were thoroughly confused now, but Ahsoka's laughter was infectious.
"Well, we're in luck. The transport comes again today, and there will be no hunters. How do you propose we get up to the transport?" Jinx said, once he had recovered.
"We jump." Was all Ahsoka said, and Rex grunted at her. "Ok, us three will jump and I'll throw Rex." She corrected herself.
"I'm liking this plan less and less." He grumbled. "Just tell me to jump this time." He shared a look with her, grinning.
"Now where's the fun in that?"
"For me? When I'm not screaming like a shiny." Rex bantered back. Ahsoka took an exaggerated look at him, taking in his dirt and blood stained blackies.
"Yeah, you're anything but shiny." She quipped.
"And there's the Snips that we all know and love." Rex joked. The other two were watching this banter like the galaxy's greatest bolo-ball match.
"Yeah, she's not a big fan of this jungle though." Ahsoka starts, passing the ball over the center line and into Rex's court.
"I thought togruta were at home in the rainforest." Rex kicks the ball with a sarcastic special, and it flys back to Ahsoka.
"Why do you think I left?" Nice recovery. Ahsoka regains control of the ball.
"Because a jedi kidnapped you when you were three." Ooh, Rex just pulled the 'I know about your baby stories' card.
"He saved me from pirates." Ahsoka, back on the defensive.
"Pirates eh? No wonder you smell." Aaaand, it's a hygiene insult from Rex, Back to Ahsoka.
"You're not daisy fresh either." The tables have turned, and She's got him on the run.
"You weren't complaining when you were cold last night." Wait, what's this? A winning score from Rex! Apply ice to burned areas.
Ahsoka punched him lightly in the arm. Foul!
"What was that for?" He asked innocently.
"You weren't complaining about how I smelled when you were bedridden with an infected leg." She says, laughing.
"No, I wasn't" He agreed.
"If you two are done ridiculing each other, I'm going back to sleep." Jinx yawned.
"Well, since the spectators have gone home, I guess I'm the referee. I say Rex won the match." O-Mer said, before he too crawled back into his nest.
Ahsoka kissed Rex on the cheek, and climbed back into bed. Rex wasn't very tired, and he wasn't anxious to sleep anytime soon. He sat on the edge of the alcove, thinking. He thought about how, in a few hours, they could be out of this place. Force be with us. He thought, unconsciously rubbing the scar from the blaster shot on his leg.
A/N ~ Ok, I needed some levity before all the action. This chapter was really, really fun to write. What do you think, should I put more of these chapters in here? Riddle of the day, What gets wetter and wetter the more it dries?
