The silence was almost as deafening as the previous din. Ahsoka fumbled for her lightsaber, and gripped her shoto blade. Using the force to make sure that there was no one close enough for her to accidentally impale, she ignited the blade. It's yellow glow lighting up the room. Rex had his arms wound tightly around her, and that made it slightly harder to move. But they had light. Fives kicked off a wall and came soaring over to where the couple was floating, and Ahsoka grabbed him with her free hand. The three of them hit the wall, and clung there.
She held her saber away from them, trying to not let anybody get too close to the blazing gold blade. She could see the door, but she would need both hands free to get over and get it open. She pressed the hilt of her lit shoto blade into Rex's hand.
"Hold this." She commanded, and he took it with a startled expression.
"Uh... Cy- er... Commander?" He asked, holding it at nearly arms length. He knew what that blade could do. Ahsoka rolled her eyes ruefully.
"Hold it and don't be stupid with it." She revised, smirking at him. Rex gulped, and clearly didn't know what 'being stupid' would classify as with a lightsaber that could cut through durasteel walls like butter. He defaulted to the blaster safety basics: Don't point it at yourself, don't point it at your brothers. Don't touch the glowy end.
Ahsoka pushed off the walls and grabbed the door jam, pulling herself to a stop. SHe tried to lever the doors open, but she wasn't strong enough to just muscle them apart. Sighing, she pulled out her main blade and cut through the door with ease. Rex suddenly seemed even more nervous about the lightsaber he was holding and seemed to shy away from it. Ahsoka used the force and shoved the door out into the hall, creating a draft of fresher air. A yelp and a clang could be heard from down the hall, and Anakin grabbed the wall, rubbing his head.
"Really, snips? Ow." He complained, pushing his way around the door. He looked to be sure that everyone was ok in the safe room, his own saber giving light. He fished around in his pockets with his left, ungloved hand and pulled out a few flashlights. Ahsoka crawled back to Rex, and he pushed her lightsaber back at her. She laughed.
"No offence, but I'll leave the lazer swords to you." Rex commented dryly. Anakin ungloved his right hand, passing his saber to his left. Ahsoka gave a jolt, seeing it to be a metal prosthetic. It was apparently magnetized, and he used it to grip the ceiling so he was in the middle of the room. Now that Ahsoka thought about it, it made sense. She had heard rumor that Anakin had lost his hand in a duel with the Count, but this confirmed it. She decided that it was a subject to bring up later, as her Master could be sensitive about stuff like this. All of the troops in the room had found a wall by now, and stood at attention the best they could. Ahsoka suppressed a giggle because half of them were sideways or upside down.
"Listen up men." Anakin started, his blue blade casting strange and terrifying shadows on his already grim face. "We have our work cut out for us. The main reactor is offline, and we have no power. We had to make a stop in our hyperspace jump when we were ambushed, so we are quite literally in the middle of nowhere in space. We have no comms, no power, no life support. The life support is the first priority, so we can get the air recyclers going. After that, the hyperdrive so we can get back in inhabited space. All mechanics, divide into two groups. The first group will get to work right away, and the second one will rest." Anakin paused, and panting slightly. The room was getting stale fast, and the temperature was dropping fast. Ahsoka shivered slightly, and resisted the urge to press into Rex for warmth.
"Infantry troops," Anakin continued, "Or any of you who have no mechanical experience, find someone who does and give them a hand. Internal comms, from your helmets and what not should still work, with in the ship. We have no way to recharge them as of yet, so only use the comm in case of an emergency." He turned to Ahsoka. "I will lead the first group. Commander Tano will lead the second. Worst case scenario, we have four standard rotations of oxygen left. A week tops, if we take every precaution that we can and will take." He looked at each man in turn, his eyes settling on Ahsoka. "Dismissed." Rex flinched. That had been Krell's signature line.
The room had whispered mutters flying around it now, but they followed their orders. Soon Ahsoka found the rest of her men, and lead them to the different barracks. There was about fifty men she was responsible for now. The barracks had plenty of flashlights, and she put the sabers away.
"Alright men, you heard the general. We rest now, and will take over for Skywalker's men in about twelve standard hours." She paused, and looked to Rex. She was still unsure about leading this many people at once. He nodded reassuringly. She was doing good so far. "Uh... We're losing thermal heat fast. Stay together, share body heat, utilize whatever thermoregulation you have at your disposal. It's gonna get cold boys." She intoned, her voice was grim. She pushed back off of one of the bunks, signaling the end of her speech. She climbed her way over to Rex, who was sitting/floating on a bottom bunk by the wall. Ahsoka sat next to him, and he wrapped a blanket around their shoulders.
They just sat for a while, feeling the temperature drop and listening to the troops mutter softly to one another. There were some soft snores too, but any sound was welcome. The absolute silence of space had always scared Ahsoka. She shivered in the growing cold.
"Cyare?" Rex's voice was soft, a barely whispered mumble against her montrails. "You're trembling." He pointed out, wrapping her arms around her. She snuggled closer.
"It's cold." She whined softly. "Togruta aren't built for cold. We get sick, and if it's really bad, it can cause headblindness." She pulled the blanket around her montrails. She could feel Rex's concern radiating off of him in waves.
"Oh. What's headblindness?" He asked, curious about the new term.
"It's where our montrails fill with fluid and keep us from echolocating. It's like a really bad ear infection." She supplied. Rex frowned, and got up, pushing away from her. She couldn't see what he was doing in the dim light from the flash lights, but he came back with two gloves and settled next to her. She looked at him, confused. He gently placed a glove over the tips of her montrails and pulled them down. It was a funny sensation, and muffled her hearing slightly. It also blocked out most of her ability to echolocate. She almost groaned, remembering when her montrails were first hollowing out on Mon Cala.
"What's the matter?" Rex asked, seeing her mouth twist regretfully.
"You covered my montrails and it blocked a good part of my echolocation." She said petulantly.
"Oh... sorry I can-"
"No no no, it's ok." She hurriedly cut him off. "I don't really need it right now. I was thinking back to Mon Cala, when they were hurting so bad from hollowing out and being underwater. All I had to do was cover them!" She laughed, waking up Tup. He gave her a lazy smile before rolling back over and curling into his mini pile of brothers. Clones were weird like that. They liked cuddles and dogpiles.
She pressed a kiss to Rex's cold cheek, and cuddled into his side. "Sleep." She whispered, about ready to nod off herself. Had it really only been last night when Rex had come home, drunk out of his mind and had asked her to marry him? A smile crossed her face. She had said yes to get him to go to sleep then, but she hadn't realized just how much she meant those words.
