Before Classes

Harry's POV

The first day of classes began with ease. Hermione had taken it upon herself to lag behind the American Exchange students, jotting furiously at the now very tightly jumbled mess of notes on her parchment as we showed them about the castle. Hermione seemed to take it as a personal affront that Annabeth's schedule matched perfectly to her own and spent the remainder of breakfast scowling at her quickly cooling porridge. Ron glanced at me exasperatedly before turning back to his plate of bacon and eggs.

To my left was Percy, who ate with such gusto it was a wonder he didn't inhale his fork. Next to him sat a bemused Annabeth and to her left was Nico. I frowned slightly, it wasn't that I disliked Nico, it was just something about him that put me on edge. All three of them had an odd aura of power about them, but it was only Nico who made my hair stand on end, like there was a constant draft on my neck that I somehow couldn't shake.

"What do we have first, Harry?" asked Percy, who had taken a brief moment away from mumbling about his stack of pancakes not being blue, to glance at me.

"Defense Against the Dark Arts with Professor Snape." I said, pulling my already tattered schedule from my pocket.

"Why Dumbledore would appoint Snape as Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher..." Ron's sentence ended in a string of insults muffled by another mouthful of food.

Percy laughed a little "He sounds like he's a real cup of tea. How come everyone here has such odd names, like that Slughorn guy?" he gave a little snort.

I opened my mouth to reply but Hermione beat me to it "Just because they're not common in American doesn't mean they're odd, and it's not like they had much choice what their names are." Her tone was clipped and her eyes stayed firmly trained on her spoon.

I furrowed my brow, I knew Hermione was suspicious but it wasn't like her to be so short with people. Nico raised his eyebrows before returning to playing solemnly with his food, Percy seemed oblivious to her cold tone, more interested in finishing his third serving of pancakes and Annabeth only regarded her for a moment before turning to Ginny, striking up a conversation about the upcoming trip to Hogsmead.

"Bloody hell Hermione, you don't have to bite their heads off." Ron grumbled through a 4th slice of toast.

"Professor Slughorn is a teacher, he should hardly be allowed to make fun of his name." She snapped, forgetting her oatmeal all together.

"He was just pointing out that the teachers have odd names, you could at least try to be friendly." Persisted Ron

She glowered at him "Maybe, instead of off and making friends with them you should be trying to figure out what they're hiding!"

"We don't even know if there hiding anything." I interjected, matching Hermione's low tone so they could not hear.

"Oh, so when it's Malfoy the both of you are more than ready to off and assume he's Death Eater but-"

"Malfoy's a slimy rotten git who's fathers a Death Eater, it's not a far stretch." Interrupted Ron.

"Fine! Make friends with whoever you want but if you ask me it's them who's more likely to be a Death Eater then Malfoy" Snapped Hermione, slamming her books into her bag and storming out of the hall.

"What's her problem?" asked Nico, the hair on my arms rising slightly as we made eye contact.

"Classes." I said "McGonagol fudged the schedule; she gets like this at the start of term." They nodded and returned to finishing breakfast.

Ron grinned and nudged me in the ribs "Nice save Harry." I nodded distractedly, my mind still on Hermione's words. Maybe she was right, not about the Death Eaters but about Percy and his friends; there was something off about them and Harry had never been very good at ignoring his instincts.
