||TWENTY-TWO - PARTY||

Tatum's POV

Veronica's going on about her problems at lunch the next day, and I'm not really paying attention to her. She's always ranting about one thing or another.

"Anyway, enough about my drama. Betty, you were saying something about Jughead's birthday?" Veronica finishes. Finally.

"Yeah, just that Mr. Jones told me, Jughead's never had a birthday party." Betty says. Archie nods. "Let's have one for him. Like, a low-key surprise party."

"No." Archie shook his head.

"That's a fantastic idea." Veronica says.

"No. Jughead doesn't like his birthday." Archie argues.

"Everybody says that. Nobody really means it." Kevin says.

"Jughead is a lone wolf." Archie states.

"Okay, ignoring the negativity. Betty, you know me. Any excuse to wear a cute party dress." Veronica agrees.

"Yeah." Betty nods.

"Okay, so I'm thinking a quaint gathering." Veronica starts. "Inner circle only."

"Oh, my God." Kevin says. "Don't turn around." We ignore him, and all follow his gaze to the person he's looking at. Chuck Clayton.

"Holy Chuck." Kevin states, as he walks past us. "I think his lats got bigger. Not that I care. Because, he's evil incarnate."

"What's Chuck Clayton doing back?" Archie asks.

"He got suspended, not expelled." Veronica explains. "Even though he should've been drawn and quartered for what he did."

Betty stands up, and walks over to where Chuck is sitting next to Ethel. Betty talks with him, rather angrily, and she slams her fists on the table. But, soon, she comes back.

"What was he doing, accosting her?" I ask Betty.

"No, he was apologizing." Betty answers.

"Oh, I'm so sure." Veronica argues. "Chuck Clayton doesn't have a contrite bone in his muscle-bond body."

"You know what, can we talk about something else? Like, like Jughead's surprise party." Betty suggests. She then looks down at her hands.

"Betty?" I try to grab her attention.

"Look, there's a lot a can't do, a lot I can't control. But I can damn well make sure my friend has the best birthday of his life." Betty says.

"Screw it. I'm with Betty. My dad's away. We can do it at my house." Archie agrees. "I think we could all use a good time."

"Now you're talking my language." Veronica says.

"It's gonna be epic." Archie states.

When Betty's leaving the lunch room, I catch up with her.

"Betty, what exactly happened between you and Chuck, that night?" I ask, as we walk side by side to our next class.

"Veronica asked me to keep the details under wraps, okay?" Betty answers.

"Yeah. All right. No worries." I say. "I only really asked because it looked like you were upset."

"No it's fine. Don't worry about it." Betty says. "Bye." She goes off to her English class.

The next night, is Jughead's party. When I arrive, Archie is still setting up. So, I go up to my room, and get into my outfit.
