I Should Thank You

Chapter 5| Chance

It's been about 4 days and I've still not found a job anywhere. To think not a single place in this city has a job for me makes me worried. Especially since I've been to so many other shopping districts and just businesses I could find around me. I spent morning to noon searching endlessly, but nothing. 

All of the people I've asked haven't even been the least bit helpful with a few exceptions. Most of the managers and employees I've talked to only seemed to judge me. It's not every day where you see a "little kid" ( what they call me) asking for a job. 

And I mean they aren't wrong at all. There aren't many homeless children in Yokohama. After all, there are orphanages around, that takes care of that.

You might be wondering why I don't go to an orphanage. Well, I tried that already.

Even if it was only for a little while, I asked if they could take me in. But nowadays it seems that they aren't functioning well either.

Plan A has failed, but I still got Plan B which is also... failing.

So far at least...

Concerning the whole looking through the warehouses I've made some progress, however, I only just realized how large they actually are and how many there actually are.

Throughout the 4 days, I've been able to search through 2. I could have probably searched more, but it was only 2 days when I found out the place wasn't abandoned. 

It kind of relieved me because now I know there had to be decent stuff since it's a port after all. New things get shipped every day, so I could probably find some fooood.

I'm so hungry. I hadn't eaten anything since I was kicked out. The only thing I had was a bottle of water which I bought with the small savings I had. Maybe I should have got food, but I heard that you can survive without food for a month and water for 3 days.

Obviously, water would be the smartest choice, I can hold out for a little while to get a meal...

Is what I'd like to say, but I'M HUNGRY.

Few hours later

I checked my phone quickly to see the time. I'm glad I have it, but I can't waste it or I'm really screwed. It's been helpful to know the exact times when I have to move around and get back. I've already figured out the time shifts change and when the number of workers isn't around so that's a plus.

It's about 9:37 pm right now, and the majority of shifts must have ended 20 mins ago which means most people have left. 

I slightly opened the warehouse door I've been using since day 1 and took a peek through before letting myself slip out. Without being noticed I quietly speed walk to the side of the building and then the back of another. 

Thank god it's somewhat winter though. The sky gets dark earlier around mid-afternoon making it completely black all around right now. 

There were a few small lights that were traced by the main walkways and open areas, but not too many the way I was going. And with the help of the night sky, I was completely invisible.

Just as a precaution though, I still hid behind crates and corners just in case one of them bulky baldies saw me through the alleyways between the warehouses. 

The metal place I saw earlier was quite a ways far and I knew if I wasn't careful it could really be over, but it's been 4 days and I've made it this far right?

I still don't know what to do about anything. I mean I have somewhat of a temporary home, and all I really need as of now is food. With that I'll survive a little longer, but what do I do after? I can't stay here forever. 

Scratch that I can't stay here for 2 years. I can get a job when I'm 18, but that's way too long and far from now. Who even knows if I'll make it. 

"Shut up (Y/N)! You can't worry about the future right now if you haven't even secured your present."

A heaviness invaded my heart and my eyes started to tear up, but just like before all of an instance it went away.

"I feel weird," I say again

It's always when I'm sad. I feel weird as if something is sucking the emotions right out of me as if they don't exist. Maybe it's just my brain trying to tell me not to worry about anything.

After being clouded up in my thoughts, I focus back while still running for the building. But let's just say I was a little late and ran face-first at the side of the metal warehouse I've been looking for.

"Great!" 

The impact made me bounce off the wall and onto the ground. I look up while trying to stand up and

"Looks like I made it."

I walk around the perimeter of the building searching for the entrance, but as I got close to it I couldn't help but start shivering.

Finally standing in front of the door, I slightly pull it open and a rush of cold air hit me in the face.

"What is this place? A giant freezer?"

I walk through the door and shut it close behind me.

"Damn it why is it so cold?"

Taking a stroll around I noticed how packed the inside was. There were tons of small boxes and giant refrigerators lined up like your average grocery store.  It seemed bigger on the outside, but the warehouse was fairly small compared to the other ones by a lot.

I went to one of the shelves on the floor next to me and opened up a box and can I say JACKPOT.

It was filled with different types of candy. I opened another box on a different shelf and there were bags of chips. I went to the pack of refrigerators and they had ice cream, fruits and vegetables, and CHEESEEE!

This was gonna be good. I eat 3 meals every day and it's been 4 days since I last ate so that would mean I would eat 12 whole full meals plus more because I CAN.

Alright, now I'm prepared for ANYTHING.

This place is really far from where I'm staying so I guess I'll just go get my bag and the few things that I found and go to one closer to here. I definitely can't stay here or I'll die from hypothermia or something.

When I'm done, those fruit gummies and cheese are mine.

Hey there! It's been a while. Sorry, I took so long. I don't know why I did, but I hope you enjoy it because I'll be posting the next chapter real soon I promise and it's going to start to get interesting if it hasn't already. Like I mentioned in the "Hello" chapter, I'd appreciate it if you all gave me story ideas.
