Nightmares

Once again, Smii7y offered to sleep on the couch and I fell asleep on the bed.

I fell asleep quickly, the way you do after a good cry, but my dreams also came quickly. Talking about Eric for the first time brought all the memories back to my head and they invaded my dreams. Eric was hurting me. His wife laughed as she watched.

"Miki?" I heard someone yell from far away.

"Miki?" This time it was louder.

"Miki!" My eyes snapped open and Smii7y was standing over me.

"It was just a nightmare," I said, still trembling from the feeling.

Smii7y began to sit down on my bed, causing me to flinch.

"No, please," I said, putting my hand out to guard him. He quickly stood back up and grabbed my hand.

"How could anyone have hurt you like this?" He asked, grabbing my outstretched hand. I looked down in shame. I shouldn't have been scared of Smii7y, but fear was running through my body.

"Is it okay if I sit down?" He asked, trying to make contact with my downcast eyes. I nodded shakily. He lowered himself down slowly, until he was sitting on the bed. I squeezed my eyes shut in all my embarrassment and fear.

"Can I put my arm around you?" He asked gently. I shook my head no. My vision went blurry, and Smii7y sounded really far away.

"That's okay," I heard him say through fog. I focused on trying to match my breath to his, and everything else stopped existing. After what seemed like forever, I could finally feel my hand in his again.

"I'm sorry," I said through tears that I didn't even know I had shed. My muscles all gave out at once and I fell into him. Smii7y seemed to relax in relief too.

Once again, I fell asleep quickly after my cry, and when I woke up the next morning, I was surprised to find Smii7y still next to me. I hadn't slept in the same bed as anyone since Er-....

But this was different. I felt warm and safe. I didn't want to move or ruin this perfect moment. I watched Smii7y sleep for a while, but I finally knew I had to get up and get ready for whatever the day would bring.

I showered, got dressed, made up, and right as I was going to check on Smii7y, I got a text from Elle.

"Call me when you're available," is all it said.

"Will do," I responded quickly, "Just gonna see if Smii7y is awake so we can do something."

I walked in the bedroom, and Smii7y was on his phone.

"She doesn't know?" He asked. I had no idea what he was talking about. My phone buzzed and I read the message from Elle.

"He's awake."

They were texting each other again.

"Did you tell her?" I asked, suddenly scared.

"No, no, Miki," he said rushing to stand in front of me. "Of course I didn't. I just told her that we talked about it, and all she said is that you were cheated on. So I assumed she didn't know."

"I have never told anyone that," I whispered.

"Thank you for trusting me, Miki." He held his arms out for a hug, but waited for me to close the gap. I wrapped my arms tight around his neck. As I held on tight I asked him if we could forget about it for a while.

"Of course," he tilted his head down to kiss my forehead.

I pulled away.

"What do you want to do today?" I asked hoping to change the subject.

"Mini golf?" He suggested.

"Or we could go golfing for real?" I retorted. He looked surprised.

"I have never been golfing for real before."

"Well, I was on the golf team all throughout high school, and you'll definitely still be able to beat me at it." I smiled. He laughed back and agreed.

He got ready quickly, and we drove to a golf course only a few minutes away. We had to rent clubs and a cart. I showed Smii7y quickly how to hold the clubs and some small etiquette things and we were ready to go.

The first hole already proved my previous point; I had already lost a ball to a lake and managed to miss my putt 4 times. Smii7y scored one point less than me, and the trend continued for the rest of the game. I tried to forget about all the previous conversations and trauma and just live in this moment.

Smii7y made sure to hold my hand as we rode on the cart, and encourage me despite my terrible attempts of getting the ball in the hole. I smiled at him when he made a good shot, and laughed when he swung and missed the ball. He kissed me on the forehead as he officially won at the last hole, and I took the moment after to kiss him on the lips. He smiled that goofy smile of his and put his arm back around me.

As we returned all our equipment and got back to the car, I checked my phone that had been blown up by Elle.

"Shit," I said, and Smii7y looked over with a questioning look. "Elle told me to text her this morning but I forgot after everything that happened.

"Well call her," he suggested. "I'll be okay driving without the company."

I dialed her and immediately apologized. She assured me it was okay, and asked how Smii7y reacted to the news.

"It was okay," was all I said feeling embarrassed.

"I knew he wouldn't judge you for being cheated on." I nodded, but I knew she couldn't see me.

"Well, I'm glad you two are okay, and I hope you can be happy now!" She sounded so excited. "So he's really going to move down to Maine with you?"

"You two really are best friends now, huh?" I said, looking at Smii7y. He looked back with a smile.

"Well, we have the same priorities," Elle said. "He really is adorable you know. Everytime he's unsure about something, or just wants to talk about you, he comes to me and just pours his heart out to me. He's really, really sweet, Miki, and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't jealous of what you have. You two are so cute together."

"We really are," I smiled and reached over to touch Smii7y gently on the leg.

"Be happy and I love you, Miki!" Elle hung up before waiting for an answer.

"Again," Smii7y said very gently once he noticed the call was over, "I'm not trying to push, but are you going to tell her?"

"Should I?" I asked, scared.

"I think it's definitely worth considering. She's your best friend, and would be a great support system for you."

And he was right.

"I'll tell her."
